We're ok thanks. The house has some minor damage to outside trim.
The boat has some non-structural damage but is basically serviceable.
We have some severe tree damage, one of which narrowly missed my wife's
car, but as they say, a miss is as good as a mile. We have no power
or running water but I've got the diesel generators running on the
boat, piping power back into the house so we have lights, fans and
refrigeration. We're gradually getting back internet service. That
makes us a lot better off than many. We have three major island
communities that have totally lost their bridges so they are hurting a
great deal. Some other areas, mostly on barrier islands have been
leveled almost beyond recognition. It's going to be a long recovery.

It's good tp see your damage was minimal. I don't know if you've
seen much TV but there has been extensive coverage and it looks
like tornado damage in many places. Sanibal causeway got ripped
up pretty badly but the bridge looks OK. I think repairs
shouldn't take too long. Pine Island bridge is gone and part of
the causeway has been washed away creating another island. FMB
is pretty much wiped out.

Rescue and recovery efforts are well underway and seem to be well
organized. Joe Biden sends best wishes and promised federal help,
but Desantis and state and local officials seem to have put the
wheels in motion along with volunteers from many
states.

Inland and the east coast sustained spotty flood damage and some
wind damage but nothing like what happened to SW Florida.

Good luck Wayne. Glad to see you're OK.

I was thinking often of you and Greg as I watched the TV coverage of
the hurricane. Glad to hear that you made it through without major
damage or injuries. All I could picture was your GB sitting in your
back yard.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all affected.

Thanks. Some of the local boat damage is just sickening to look at - big 50 and 60 footers washed up on streets and bashed together. We have satellite TV in the house which has allowed us to stay abreast of developments. At one time I was thinking about buying a beach front condo on Sanibel for my old age but I think that's off the table.

I still haven't heard from Greg which concerns me. He's in an area that doesn't have a great deal of elevation and may have experienced house damage.

I was wondering why more boaters didn't weigh anchor and sail a hundred miles west. Up here a number of recreational sailors took their boats out of the water early. Our Thanksgiving weekend is usually the big moving day.

Yes, I'm going to try EMAILing him.

I believe our official elevation here is something like 7.9 feet. We have much higher seawalls however, and Greg is closer to the Gulf than we are.

Sailing west on the Gulf of Mexico with a major storm in the forecast would be extremely risky. The best strategy here is to up the Caloosahatchie River river beyond the first lock.

When a major storm (like a tropical storm or hurricane) is forecast up
here many boaters who have their boats in marina slips will try to get
a mooring
if available to ride out the storm. Doesn't guarantee the mooring won't
drag or the chain won't break but it's better than banging around in the
slip. I did this a couple of times with the Navigator.

The harbor master in Scituate MA would also go to each boat backed in a
slip and put the anchor out a ways like a Med mooring to help prevent
the boats from moving too much.

Don't think either would be of much help in a storm like Ian though.

I understand the appeal of not being at a dock but I've seen too many moorings break to feel totally comfortable riding out a hurricane on one. We're on a fairly protected canal and our dock has oversized pilings that extend 10 ft above the normal high tide level. If the wind had stayed out of the south the way it was supposed to, we would have been totally fine, but there was one final blast from the northwest that pushed us against the dock pilings. The marks on the pilings are clearly visible about a foot from from the top. Close call. There would have been a lot of damage if the boat had ridden over the top.

The best strategy here is to get inland on the Okeechobee Waterway at least as far as the first lock. We did that for hurricane Charlie in 2004 when the boat was brand new to us and we did not yet have our own dock. That worked out fine. The risk is waiting too long because the locks and bridges stop operating well before the storm hits.

I think there should be no rebuilding allowed in the barrier islands.
Same as the Russian River here. Always flooded homes every year.
Government said, no more aid if a house is build in the flood plain.
