Giorgio Bellini
Knows about Italy July 9

During World War 2, did the Germans and Italians keep an eye on the
Pacific Theatres, similarly did the Japanese also know about the
European theatre as well?
Japanese Navy engineers helped Italy to build the Aquila and Sparviero
aircraft carriers (none of the two become operational). When Regia
Marina asked the Imperial Japanese Navy to train the crews on her own
aircraft carriers in the pacific theatre the Japanese declined because
they didn’t have the time. This was one of the reasons (not the only
one) why the Italian aircrat carriers was a failed program

However Italian submarines shuttled from the Atlantic to the Pacific to
carry to Japan rare raw materials (mostly from Germany) that were under
embargo. Remarkable is the story of the Luigi Torelli Submarine. Stuffed
with 130 tons of material (including 800 aircraft-mounted autocannons
Mauser MG 151), and heading to the Pacific, when in Singapore the
Japanese seized the submarine and arrested the whole crew: it was on 8
September, 1943: the Japanese knew that Italy had surrendered in that
very day and the Italian crew knew nothing. The submarine was later
handed down to Kriegsmarine.
