well it's been a few decades since i've done much street riding (let's
just say my rz350 was nearly new then)..... so i've put a few miles on
the harley road king last year and am now contemplating a longer ride to
Sturgis, Yellowstone park or the everglades so what advice can ya'll's
give to an older gentleman prepping for a late summer/fall trip.
so far i've got a guy giving the bike a good once over and i have
started some stretching exercising stuff to keep me limber. wondering
about on the road cuisine, my gut is pretty tolerant of bugs & viruses
should i pack MRE's or just go with the locals grub. the trip reminds
me of the times I'd go camping with little more than a Swiss army knife
and a jar of honey, but well I'm not as young as i use to ...... the
warren Weber photos from years gone by have taunted me into thinking i
need to try a trip on a less off road worthy bike to some remote areas
of the lower 48 states... old but still up for a challenge.
john
btw taking an old EMT friend with me whom rides
a bazillion lbs Indian..

Spring is sooner and might have more wildflowers. Why wait?

Friend and I did the big 2-week circle in Utah in a Yaris in March 2017
including 3 days of skiing in Brian Head.. It would have been MUCH
better on a bike. "Adventure" bike would be fine. No idea where you're
coming from, but the Dakotas are no match for Utah. I can give you a
list of places you shouldn't miss and you can work out your own route,
but they're pretty much every national/state park or monument. 2 weeks
wasn't enough, but the friend had a time limit. We missed stuff that I
would have really liked to see.

One motel you should stay at is the Recapture Inn in Bluff -- the guy
loves topo maps and bought so many when he moved to Utah that he
qualified as a dealer and got a big discount. Worth talking to the guy.
And there's a Chinese restaurant (Tops City Cafe) in Delta that's as
good as any of the places I've been in the local Chinese cities
(Alhambra, Monterey Park, CHINATOWN Los Angeles, for Chrissake!).

Just riding around on the floor of Monument Valley is worth the price of
admission all by itself -- we did that decades ago on the Honda-90
converted dirtbikes, but it was good even in the rented Yaris.

NOWHERE is a s good as Utah. New Mexico and Arizona are close seconds,
but third (parts of Kalifornia) are a big jump.

DO IT!

spent a lot of time in AZ in late 80'z, & New Mex in the 90's doing
gov't work... it's pretty in Feb/ March but rest of time it
just doesn't do it for me. Utah is on the list for next year
or the year after.. I did drive 20hrs texas once just to
meet a friend for barbecue. <under the overpass of I35 & rt281>..
so tops city cafe might have to be added to the list of off
beat meeting places.

If you head to Sturgis be sure to visit the Iron Mountain Road tunnel. You come through and can see Mt.
Rushmore framed at the other end of the tunnel. I suggest not going during the Sturgfest H-D ride in or
whatever the heck they call it. Unless you like crowds. Deeney and Co will be in the Black Hills for an
annual dirt bike ride sometime August if you wanted to co-ordinate a visit. Real nice roads getting to where they
camp and the place has cabins (I'm not a fan of camping on a long ride).

If you get as far as Laramie make sure you visit the Buckhorn Bar. Real cowboy bar including bullet
hole in the mirror behind the bar.

If you get to Cody (one of the better ways to get into Yellowstone is that entrance) I recommend a visit
to the rodeo. Some weird ass stuff but like going to a chicken fight, you won't get many chances.

Cheyenne has more brewpubs per capita than most anyplace else. There were 4 within a couple blocks
of each other last I was there.

Crossing lake michigan on the ferry from Muskegon to Milwaukee is something I've wanted to do
forever and never pulled off. It's on your way.

Florida sucks in the summer.

That's my random thoughts for this morning.

Go fast. Take chances.

244 west of Rushmore -- there's now a parking area where you can pull
off, look up and see Washington in profile through a break in the rocks.
Seemed special at the time, and apparently the highway department
thought so too.

And of course Wall Drug just because you've been seeing all those
billboards. Another thing you should do ONCE.

When convenient I always ask bikers about the longest trip they've ever
taken. Longest so far was to Las Vegas, which isn't all that special.
Shortest was from the kid's house to where I met him in the Harbor
Freight parking lot. He, inspired by 'Long Way Round', bought a used
bike and was going to try something like that and was buying tools.

Oysters are icky. Better be a really fast boat to make up for the oysters.

The RedBird Gentlemen's club was quite the experience. Once was enough though.
Pretty sure it no longer exists anyway. Was quasi-legal at best even way back then
(92ish). How we got out of there with our friend Billy not beaten to a pulp is a miracle.

There is that.

One thing I forgot. If you go into Yellowstone NP be ready for the "Full German".
This is where the German family in front of you (maybe 27 cars in front) stops in the
middle of the 2 lane to take a picture of the 17th buffalo they have seen today. You'll
know it was 17 because you were behind them for the first 16 where they did the Full
German too.

Go fast. Take chances.

This is weird -- My .Xdefaults contains a few xterm things, but the
rest is Netscape stuff. I wonder if any of that is relevant in any way
to Firefox and Thunderbird. Better leave it alone...

Bitte, danke and scheiss. That pretty much covers it.

Volker posted a few times in October, and Chris Coogan posted about a
specific problem. Somebody named Nadia posted "hi" several times,
probably by mistake. That's about it. MikeW gave up on Facebook and
hasn't rejoined RMD. Arnett was gone for a while. Baxter moved to S.
Carolina and got a dog along with the goddam fabulous house and lot.

Facebook is... well, not alive and well, but limping along. There's an
RMD private group there.

Life used to be better on a number of levels.

Still here, fighting a Yamaha WR250X's no start condition (ECU service
display varyingly hints at tipover sensor, sidestand sensor, clutch and
gear sensor so I suspect some grounding issue) and planning an overhaul
of the mighty orange turd (1998 KTM 620 SC) in need of top/bottom end,
forged piston, gaskets and couple gearbox bearings. But this can only
take place if lambda system/air leak/injector issue plaguing antique
Audi A3 (aka. "Olympic Nightmare" - because of the rings and because of
the spectacular reliability) is remedied.

RMZ450K8 is largely put out of service, COVID-19 you know.

So Facebook is not the ultimate salvation? How come?

We used to be younger on a number of levels.

LoL, tip over sensor, my bike would never run if it had one of those...
at what point do you remove all sensors and install a resistor?

Google translate couldn't cope with what I assume are the important
bits. "Crippled hound" is too obvious, so it must mean something else.

Ganz gut! I remember that too. And Ich spreche kein Deutsch.

No interspersion. I suppose it could be done with copy+paste, but some
people don't know what that means and it's a nuisance even so. It
discourages conversation in favor of pronouncements.

In fact it has to say "Hundskrippl" (with a "s"), my bad. Here's the
training video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVI9OQDlJq0

Tell me more about endoprotheses.

Greets,
Volker,

just found an original video tape with the first "Crusty Deamons of Dirt"
in a cellar cabinet. By Fleshwound Films, featuring Seth Enslow's epic
jump. The aftermath: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4viC07kvXwE
