Russia cannot afford to lose this fight. It has to remind itself of what happened to Iraq after the latter misadventure in Kuwait.

If Russia were to withdraw from Ukraine without achieving its initial objective, it will not be the end of the matter for the West. It will be the West turn to denuclearise and demilitarise Russia. This will be followed by the dismemberment of Russia until it becomes extinct, like ex-Yugoslavia. This may not be achievable but the West will give it a shot.

More likely, the West will go for those smaller states which have explicitly supported Russia. Even those which have abstained will be dealt - “either you are with us or you are with the enemy”.

Whichever side wins, the impact on the world will be great. If Russia wins, the world will phase quicker into a multi-polar one. If the West wins, it will be a unipolar world in which nothing now can stand in the West’s way to globalise its World Order and “Universal Values”.
