Is (or was) there a trick that makes / made
it unnecessary to have words that print a
number left aligned?

E.g. something like 99. -8 D.R -- I need it far too much.
It is also handy to have a .R that emits a '+' or space
in front of positive numbers.

I guess it originates back from the times of fixed space dot matrix printers where
each EMIT incremented an OUT variable. With OUT it was easy to advance to the
desired print start position through SPACES.

Given the parameter means 'field width' what does that even do?

Handy for applications that you write? Well, that's the job
of an engineer isn't it - to create what he needs from the
materials he's got.

The left align is free; the field starts with the number.

In olden days had mode switch; when enabled would print positive numbers with '+'.
Went away long back for whatever reason. At present I'm using '+' to indicate a
relative address . Have mode switches to display numbers relative, absolute or both
and also to include commas or not.

'There are no positive numbers really. Matter of fact they're all positive.'
