"Our children's electric toothbrush contains a 32-bit ARM processor,
clocked at 48MHz. I've even got the development tools for the Cypress
PSoC 4, and they've nicely labelled the debug pads.
It's just a toothbrush. Really."

That little voice in my old brain keeps repeating:
"Why when I was a boy we could do that with a 4 bit processor
and 1K of serial RAM!"

That would be because you didn't read what this toothbrush can do. It has a bluetooth connection which allows tracking of brushing habits and educational materials all of which helps teach children how to brush properly.

Sounds like a worthwhile product to me. Parent recommended, kid safe!

Parents aren't just as caught up by marketing as their kids? Every advert
is designed to make one feel inadequate in some way. Comparison pervades
society - everything from toothbrushes to computer languages.

Oh ya, I read it. I just would never consider that feature set for my toothbrush. :-)
I am just too damned old.
(Oh and yes I still have my own teeth) :-))))

Good for you! I have mine too... where did I put that box? lol

No, so far they are all still in my head.

I think the toothbrush is for children who are learning to brush. People like us have hardened brains that can't actually be rewired for new habits so easily.

That might explain many of your postings, if you see them as adverts.

Concerning professional adverts, I have my doubts; take the typical
car advert that shows the car on an empty road (or off-road) in nice
surroundings; I don't think that it is intended to make the viewer
feel inadequate. It is intended to hook into the desire for nice
surroundings, empty roads, and adventure (combined with safety), and
tries to establish a link in the mind of the viewer between the
advertised car and the fulfillment of these desires.

Lol! They could put an Intel in there for AI, and use it to run steam engine to vibrate the brush :)

It's the wasteful mindset. A basic old arm was fairly simple. So, it's there, it's ubiquitous, so use it. I don't know this core's size, but arm's complexity has increased greatly. But, they intelligently used custom hardware processing circuits to speed things up, which can be customised according to application of the chip. Which puts them ahead of Intel, a lot.

But, constricting yourself to using less resources, would lead to room for different levels of chips, and reduce the environmental footprint, and fab space usage, compared to using more complex, bigger, chips. We need to get back to basics. But then again, maybe we could install AI and the Wikipedia database on the tooth brush, kept updated over the network, just in case any scientific advances might indicate how to brush your teeth better. But, I think most of us, already have it in hand, and don't need a computerized brush.
