It is obvious that bitcoin, although more anonymous than credit cards, can still be used to track you pretty good. This is due to the public nature of the blockchain.
So anyone with the right knowledge can have a full overview of any wallet. With some computing power the connections between different participants can be tracked, and if you ever bought bitcoin at one of the public atms, or if you ever let your bitcoin client connect from an ip that can be traced back to you (during a transaction) you are probably known to the state players (by camera in the case of the atm, and by your internet access in the other case).
Which is a bad thing if you, let's say bought a decent amount of weed, some false ids or other illegal stuff on the darknet.

Monero is supposed to work better in this respect, by usage of cryptographic hashes instead of unencrypted addresses like bitcoin. But is it really ? What is the opinion here ? Someone has a link that is worth checking out ?

Thanks,

guest

Can't answer this myself, really, but found three articles on the subject:

http://darkzzx4avcsuofgfez5zq75cqc4mprjvfqywo45dfcaxrwqg6qrlfid.onion/post/cipertrace-filed-another-monero-tracing-patent-application/
http://darkzzx4avcsuofgfez5zq75cqc4mprjvfqywo45dfcaxrwqg6qrlfid.onion/post/irs-wants-to-pay-625000-to-track-monero/
http://darkzzx4avcsuofgfez5zq75cqc4mprjvfqywo45dfcaxrwqg6qrlfid.onion/post/secret-service-pays-coinbase-for-blockchain-analysis-software/

Based on these, it seems to me that the "problem" of traceability is not solved for Monero yet, maybe the NSA has. But if you just want to buy some weed, they will not be the ones after you.
