It's kind of funny, the site is about the darknet (apparently), but forbids the access with tor, and on top it doesn't give a link to the site.
Still, I guess it's kind of positive to be mentioned in this way, the author even understood the concept.

It's nice that the author did understand the concept of rocksolid, not just
one site.

I find it funny that occasionally I find a write up on it, and it says we
have thousands of users. I can understand why they might think that if they
find a fudforum site, but the other interfaces don't show any listing of
user numbers. Not sure where they come up with those numbers.

It must come from the ff sites, plus it just sounds nicer if you write about it that way, than if you would write: "Today, I found some forum with an interesting concept, but only 5 to 10 users, now go see it". :-)
If enough ppl believe it, it could become a selffulfilling prophecy, though.

Very true. I suspect mostly bots, but there are some lurkers. There is the occasional debate or comment, and there are a few ways to post here.

Suppose so, at least for the well known ones. There are also a ton of forums that just stop after 10 posts or so, and my guess would be they also don't have lurkers anymore, after a while.
The point on fudfoum was a different one, though. If you import newsgroups with the builtin function (like def3 did, and will do again), each user will also be created locally (on the forum). Which means that if you have groups with heavy traffic, the forum will show a high number of users (like 12k or so on def3). The users that actually know the site will be a fraction of this, so it shows much bigger numbers of users than you would anticipate.

dumb bots will continue to "lurk" more like seams to be lurking but really isnt

im not really into tracking "users" beyond handling traffick and could care less about the amount of posters and lurkers
now the differentiation of whos and bot and whos a user is different but if you can differentiate the two something is wrong with $anonymity
differentiating the types of bots and users is also helpful but being able to do so means something is wrong with $anonymity
