So what the rumour mill here in Salzburg has whispered for the last three weeks has come to pass,
and Red Bull have officially confirmed that CEO and main driving force behind all their ventures Didi
Mateschitz has succumbed to an illness that has kept him out of the spotlight (which he never enjoyed
and almost always actively avoided anyway) for the last six months or so (pancreatic cancer, the same
whispers say).

We'll have to wait and see what effect this will have on the various Red Bull activities and enterprises
around the world. It's hard to imagine that someone as methodical as Mateschitz has not made solid
arrangements for his demise, but the truth of the matter remains that the majority of Red Bull's holding
company is owned by the Thai Yoovidhya family and not by Mateschitz.

The marketing and brand rights have always lain 100% with Mateschitz though (and the main heir of his
personal fortune will be his 29-year-old son Mark). And then there's also the sordid matter of Yoovidhya
'princeling' Vorayuth having fled Thailand after killing a policeman in a hit-and-run incident. He currently
still remains at large, which may well be one of the reasons for the Thai's low profile in the Red Bull universe.

At least in the short run I don't think anything will change, at least as regards the well-oiled machines of
Leipzig, Salzburg, or the Formula 1 teams. I'm a bit worried about Salzburg's ice hockey team, of which I
am a genuine fan.
