It was a good race. I only have two issues with it.

The first is the cars are pretty slow - like F3 lap times. (Just checked, FIA F3 lap times are
around 10 seconds *faster* at Spielberg than W Series.) That's a bit crap IMO, why not give the
women Renault Clios and make them carry 20kg of shopping and a child's seat?

My other issue is Ross Brawn and most of the male commentators going on about 'girls' racing.
They're women FFS, some are a good few years over 25 years old. They don't call F1 drivers boys.

A search for "boys F1" only got 25 million results. Like this:

Men are often referred to as "boys" in all sports. But if you're not "one of the boys" you might not know that.

I thought about that before I wrote it, then I re-watched an interview from the race build-up where
Brawn said 'girls' three times in under a minute.

It's not like he couldn't have said 'drivers' when he said "all the girls have got the same
equipment" (which made me raise both eyebrows!) and similar.

I've heard Brawn use 'drivers' many times when referring to F1. I don't think I've ever heard him
say 'boys' much - yet alone three times in a minute.
People like Brundle sometimes say 'boys' but that's because it's a 'pally' thing to say and he
likes to think that he's still one of them. Kravitz uses 'boys' a bit too but he's strange anyway.

detail about the race and interview.

My missus and I watched the programme live and both of us looked at each
other with raised eyebrows when Brawn was talking about the "girls".

I'm glad that you wrote your first post and didn't put spoilers in it (with stating so in the
subject at least). I hadn't written the W Series races in my calendar and didn't realise it was
this weekend. I'm trying to follow several open wheeler series this year. I live in New Zealand and
there are two New Zealanders driving in each of F2, Formula E and Indycars so, as a open-wheel
motorsport fan I have to watch those. That's a lot of races in a season with F1 and WS as well.

I'm sure Ross Brawn doesn't mean to be casually sexist...
He wasn't the only person to say 'girls' but all of the people who did were male.

Watched the C4 Highlights today. Action packed. Enjoyed it two
years ago too.

Did Sky mention Jess Hawkins did some of the driving stunts in the
still unreleased James Bond film, 'No Time to Die'? She's also
part of the F1 Aston Martin 'brand'.

They mentioned during the race that she was also a stunt driver but didn't list her bio. I skipped
through most of the before / after coverage so may have missed stuff.

I haven't watched this race (yet), but have generally enjoyed W Series. I am impressed by Alice Powell, who has fought for every penny and every race position --- there are one or two wealthy and well-connected women driving. Yet at the top of the class/wealth scale, Jamie Chadwick also has enormous professionalism and confidence, and may in truth be the better of the two. Aston Martin was happy to back her in G4 when she was 16 years old and still doing her A Levels.

I will be following Abbi Pulling's progress because I have watched her race karts at championship level, and Ginettas too, and she has determination and tactics. In the final of one of her two karting championship finals, Abbi confidently 'played' with her race position, to and fro within in the necessary points range, while the race leaders annihilated each other. (The TV commentator called it the most exciting kart race in history).

As for actual speeds -- as in all sports, speed is relative, but competition is direct; most of us have been enthralled by races in lower formulae and reduced to a coma by [some] F1 races.

Of course, the novelty of an all-woman race is part of the attraction, for male and female spectators.

You're welcome. It annoys me that (for instance) Alice Powell was racing in GP3 before her funding
ran out and now only gets to race cars which are essentially equal to regional F4 machines.

I've watched the Silverstone race and while I enjoyed it (and appreciate that we get to see the top
women drivers racing open wheelers without them having to find tens of millions of dollars in
backing in a male-centric sport) to me it seems that the drivers are really held back by their cars.

I agree on both counts. However as the W Series (and tacit sexual segregation) exists now I think
it's an insult that they're running what are essentially regional F4 cars as the pinnacle of
women's racing. In my opinion they should be in cars a lot closer to the performance of F2 (after
all they let 16 y/o boys drive those...).

I can't see that the cost would be hugely higher - if anything it might be lower as it's also a
spec series and then more F2 cars and engines would be built which would decrease cost per unit to
both series.

It is fruitless and pointless to, announce or intend that any W Series driver will enter F1. And a woman doesn't need to compete in F1 to demonstrate that there are some superb women drivers. Part of the enjoyment of W Series is that spectators don't have to nervously follow the progress of "a woman" --- it is a straight race among near equals.

What I dislike about W Series is the constant photo ops and tilted-head poses, with cupped-hand-on-waist and top-undone. For god's sake, do we see Max and Lando doing giggles and smiles at the camera? I think the contract demands must be horrendous. (But then I remember poor Kimi R. having to smile is way through a f***g coalmine tour in Poland.)

As for slow vs fast cars, I would buy a ticket to watch the current F1 field of drivers compete in F3 cars or BTCC. Good racers are good racers, and always worth watching.
