does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced alternative?

A second vote for eternal-september. It's free but it is a text-only server.

I use Google Groups on my Mac but use NewsTap (with eternal-september) on my iPhone for a dozen or so text groups including this one. The only drawback is that message status isn't synced between them but it's not that hard to keep up

Thirded. They renamed the server about 3 years ago, which was a 5 second
config change, but apart from that it's been smooth sailing with them
for years.

Fourthed. I've been using ES for ages. Tried AIOE.org (or whatever it's called) and it was a bit of
a mess-around - but that was a long time ago, it might be better now.
