It is pretty early, but he's certainly up there.

I think Lando Norris is right up there too. Only 0.048 off pole and
faster than both Mercedes as well as way faster than his teammate;
nearly a full second faster.

George is looking like the champion he is.
From memory.
Gasly, Tsunoda, Vettel and Stroll all had to use the C5 (soft) to get into Q3. George is on the C4 (Med). That is less of an advantage in the Williams but it is still an advantage. And George does appear to use tyres well. I'm hoping for a points finish.
The Ferrari's were also on the Medium, they'd rather miss out on Q3 than be stuck on the soft, showing how important starting on the medium will be today in the race. Sadly the Ferrari will be a faster race car. So 4 cars will fall behind George and two cars might pass him.
Watch that space during the race. GR and keep an eye on PG, YT, SV, LS. The Pit Stop Gap to look for in just under 20 secs. Fastest about 19.3 although Stroll managed a stunning 18.7. Slower ones about 20.5 secs, worst was 21.9. Relentlessly consistent quick laps over the full stint is what I'll be look at, ala Schumy, Alonso and George does do that.

Not only showing more pace and keeping Hamilton behind him for the first
quarter and a bit of the race, but then making up for a 5 second penalty

So is F1 back to everyone play nice mode? Seemed like to many penalties for aggressive but not dangerous driving.

The penalties were for breaking a basic rule of racing:

"You have to leave your competitor racing room"

If someone gets alongside you legally...

....and you have time to appreciate that they have got alongside you...

....(certainly true in both the incidents at turn 4; less clear at the
turn 6 incident)...

....then you have to leave that competitor room on the track.

That's the basic, and simple truth of it.

If that makes defending more difficult and passing easier...

....I'm for it.
