Yours is a better perspective IMO, and if this is the reason why the
poll failed, I am quite happy. The reason why I launched the poll is
because I thought that, *if* we want to discuss who the best players
are, it would be interesting (a) to consider not only seasonal
performances (as in the POTS poll), but also quality in a more permanent
sense, and (b) to treat all positions equally (this is partially done in
the POTS poll as well) [1]. But if we don't want to discuss who the best
players are, it's fine!
If the reason why the poll failed is, instead, that I didn't manage to
fix the issues with the format that have been identified through the
year (particularly by MH)... well, in this case I'm sorry I wasn't able
to do it, and I hope that someone else will launch a poll with a better
format.
Anyway, thanks for replying! :)
[1] There were also more reasons, e.g.:
- keeping the tradition of Benny's world class list alive, but
expressing the collective opinion
- asking people to make hard choices (e.g. if the two best players are
both right wingers, you can only choose one)
- having an archive of the best players in any given year (could be
useful e.g. to check who picked the best players in Fantasy Scout)

This is an interesting point of view, and it could mean that the
cancellation of this poll will benefit the other polls (I organize two
of them: player of the season once a year, and player of the quadrennium
once every four years).

This said, if I had to choose which poll to save between World Class XI
and Player of the Season, I would save the former. There are famous
awards about the player of the season (even when they were nominally
about the player of the _year_, they were usually actually about the
season anyway) that usually have similar results to our POTS, whereas I
think this is less true of our WCXI. I feel like the FIFA FIFPRO Men's
World 11 and the The Guardian 100 Best Male Footballers in the World are
quite different from our award; also, they were established later, so we
had a longer history! :)
