1-0 Brighton score a PK in 90 + 9!

Big blow to United's title challenge. But they should be a shoe-in for top 4, 4 points ahead of the next team with game in hand.

Brighton have a game in hand over Man U, and two games in hand over
Liverpool. So they are not mathematically out of the picture (though I
have not looked at who they have to play yet).

And it is shoo-in, not shoe-in. Look it up if you don't believe me. I
vaguely recall the expression comes from horse racing.

As Werner points out, their schedule is brutal. Liverpool's chances are super slim too. 14% according to 538, which sounds about right. If they win their last 4 games (big if) then they end up at 71 points. Seeing Liverpool's huge GD advantage, United will then realistically need 72 points. That's 9 points in 5 games. So 3 wins, or 2 wins and 3 draws. Looking at their soft schedule, it's impossible to see that not happening. Congratulations to them and Newcastle.

I actually watched this game with Mr. Lily White. Brighton are a fun team to watch and play a very risky, yet entertaining style. Even though I thought Brighton were the better team, you just kinda expected Manchester to steal a goal and win. In a perverse way, justice was done and Brighton won with a terrible Penalty call in the final seconds. Brighton seem to be doing it with young South American players, which was nice to see.

Brighton might be a prime advertisement for the thesis that coaches
matter less than the pundits think. Everyone attributed their success
to Potter, but they have not lost a beat (might even have improved?)
since de Zerbi took over. Other exhibits this year would be Unai Emery,
rubbished for his time at Arsneal, who completely turned Aston Villa's
season around, and Gary O'Neil, who took over Bournemouth early when
they were looking like the worst kind of relegation fodder.

Tough year to pick the coach of the year. Eddie Howe ? Mikel Arteta ?
de Zerbi ? Emery ?

I was only saying this the other day... Graham Potter was the media
darling; most promising English coach, tactical genius, blah blah blah...
But his time at Chelsea was pretty dire and was anything but promising,
yet Brighton have got on well without him and currently sit 7th in the
Premier League. (Brighton finished 9th under Graham Potter last season.)
So Brighton haven's suffered much by Potter leaving whilst Chelsea
actually suffered by Potter arriving! (Going from 6th when Tuchel was
sacked, to 11th when Frank arrived.)

Motto of the story: Don't believe everything you read or hear in the
media...

One could turn this around and say that De Zerbi has been absolutely brilliant.

One could, but a larger sample size is needed.

Chris Wilder had Sheffield United in European contention after their promotion season, the next season they were relegated. Moyes had West Ham in UCL contention last season, this season they are in a relegation fight. Similar pattern for Nuno at Wolves.

Sometimes the stars just align for one season.

Wait, what!?

There has to be a glitch in the Matrix.

Why not? It's a fair comment. De Zerbi has done as much for Brighton as
Graham Potter did. De Zerbi just doesn't get all the media hype because
he's an Italian. In fact, after selling Cucurella, Bissouma, Maupay and
Trossard, for Brighton to still be competing in 7th/8th/9th place in the
Premier League shows that they are a well run club with a damn good
manager plus a good back room team. Which probably just confirms that the
hype around Graham Potter and his tactical abilities was just that, hype.

Brighton will finish way above Everton though! So you can't judge anything
on one game, a game that Everton probably needed to win more... they're
Premier League safety is at stake. (Again!!!)
