I know something of the role of the O'Higginses in the early history of
Chile and its independence, but I am afraid I am very ill-informed on
the history of some of the more peculiar names of South American teams,
like Colo colo (a marsupial rat ?), The Strongest, Everton, Liverpool,
Millionarios, O'Higgins, Nublense, Delfín, Boys, El Tanque Sisley and so on.

This a reference to an indigenous Mapuche leader, who fought against Spanish
colonial domination in the 16th century.

This one means just what it says. It was founded as "The Strong Football Club",
but later the founders felt it wasn't enough I guess :-) It does stand out, indeed.

According to Wikipedia, "it is the only football team in the world to have a
battle named after it". Players, members and staff all enlisted in the Chaco
War against Paraguay (1932-1935), and they apparently "played a vital part in
the Bolivian Army's most important victory". As such, that battle is referred
to as the "Battle of Cañada Strongest" in Bolivian history books.

Those were in honour of the Merseyside duo. In the late 1900's Everton did a
tour over South America and inspired a group of Anglo-Chilean students to form
a football club. In the same epoch Liverpool de Montevideo was also founded,
by students who paid homage to Liverpool FC namely due to the "many cultural
links between the two areas" - most of the coal ships that arrived in Montevideo
came from the port of Liverpool.

This one was originally called "Club Municipal", because they were financially
supported by the Municipality of Bogotá, a link that was soon cut off (thus
becoming "Club Municipal Independiente"). Back then players did not have a monthly
wage, so the players negotiated their pay weekly with the directors. The club
had a number of Argentinian players, who demanded high wages, and the Colombian
ones didn't want to fall behind. As the club began spending more and more on
the players, local press started criticizing the directors as "noveau riche",
millionaires. So, they just formally adopted that as their name :-)

There's a number of clubs we could refer to with this one. Newell's Old Boys,
from Rosario, pays homage to Isaac Newell, an English teacher and pioneer of
football in Argentina. The club was formed by teachers and alumni of the school
he founded. In Buenos Aires there's All Boys, whose name was supposed to reflect
the youthfulness of their founders. And there's Peru's Sport Boys, from Callao,
which I guess is also a reference to their founders' youth.

I've always been curious about this one as well. According to Spanish language
Wikipedia, this one comes from a merger. Club Atlético El Tanque was founded in
1955 and given that name due to a big gas tank that lied near where the club was
founded. In 1981 they merged with a basketball club called Centro Cultural y
Deportivo Sisley, thus forming their current name. I don't know if "Sisley" is
supposed to mean something or whether it's just a surname.

Indeed.

Heart of Midlothian is cool, and clubs named after saints are usual here too.
Queen of the South is interesting, as is Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

For a bonus: Athletico was just called "Atlético" a few years ago (Clube Atlético
Paranaense, actually). They switched to the old ortographic form, with the 'h',
so as to distinguish themselves from Clube Atlético Mineiro, which is the club
that comes to mind when one refers to "Atlético" in Brasil (well, in most of it
I guess).

Usually, one would distinguish them (on a league table, for example, or similar
context) by placing the state abbreviation after the name: Atlético-MG and
Atlético-PR. Or, if you're in Minas Gerais, Atlético and Atlético-PR :-)

He's very famous here in the South. There is even a city called Garibaldi in my state.
But he was fighing against the Brazilian Empire, so he doesn't qualify as one of the Libertadores.

Probably the most successful club named after a Libertador, all things
considered.

They qualified to Serie C a couple of times, most notably in 1999 when they faced
Fluminense there (lost home and away). I remember they were semi-professional,
having being founded by members of the Distrito Federal Fire Department.

Pedro I is definitely the odd man out in the roll of Libertadores. Not only he
was the son of the incumbent Portuguese king, he later abdicated the throne of
the nation he liberated to go back and claim the one of the former colonial power.
I guess it must have made sense at the time, but regardless, that is not exactly
the profile one typically associates to an "independence hero", is it? :-)

Indeed. I never thought about it, but maybe he would have been too, had he
won the Farrapos War and earned independence for Rio Grande do Sul? Think
of the possibilities, had that happened then Grêmio and Inter would probably
have played as many Copas Libertadores as Peñarol and Nacional did.

Never mind, we're indeed getting kind of used to that, yes.

This was the season in which there was no excuse for that, though. Vasco has
formed a company to manage its football department and sold 70% of its shares
to an American investor, 777 Partners (they also own majority shares in a number
of European clubs, such as Genoa, Red Star Paris amongst others, plus a minority
share of Sevilla). So, in theory, money wasn't the problem. But the way it was
spent was so inept that it defies belief. After 14 rounds, the league table
showed we had earned what were possibly the most expensive 9 points in football
history :-/

There were some management and coaching changes since. Vasco brought in Ramón
Diaz, an experienced Argentinian manager, to replace the absolutely inept
Mauricio Barbieri (whose main credentials were playing a Sudamericana final
- and losing it - with Red Bull Bragantino). The CEO was replaced too, and
some players were brought in (and others sold too - for a change, with a
profit). The squad still has deficiencies, but it now looks and plays like a
football team again, and form has improved. Too bad we gave the rest of the
field a 19-round lead. Hopefully it isn't too late to get to that 16th position.

And, after ages, we got a big name signing again. I have no idea which manner
of wizardry was done to convince Dimitri Payet to sign for us, but most definitely
I'm not complaining. I just hope he's coming to play.

Yeah, it's unusual to see them doing that poorly. Nothing against them, though.
I'd even prefer to see them qualify to Serie B 2024 instead of us :-)

I was thinking of that one too, but I suspect NAC Breda as it is
normally written does not excite the curiosity it really should

NEC Nijmegen when written in full is pretty prosaic.

Racing White Daring Molenbeek, OTOH, does raise questions about why it
is all in English, and how many clubs amalgamated in the history. (Has
been rebooted too if I understand correctly).

Alles Door Oefening Den Haag also interesting as is Tot Ons Plezier Oss
and how could one forget Prins Hendrik Ende Desespereert Nimmer
Combinatie Zwolle.

It turns out that NAC was born out of a merger ("Combinatie") of two teams named NOAD and ADVENDO.

"NOAD is a Dutch abbreviation for Nooit Opgeven, Altijd Doorzetten (English translation: Never give up, always persevere), while ADVENDO is a Dutch abbreviation for Aangenaam Door Vermaak En Nuttig Door Ontspanning (English: Pleasant for its entertainment and useful for its relaxation). The C stands for Combinatie (combination)."

There must have been a period when the Dutch simply loved such acronyms.

Michael has already mentioned ADO Den Haag (Alles Door Oefening - Everything Through Practice), TOP Oss (Tot Ons Plezier - To Our Pleasure),
and that the 'E' in PEC Zwolle stands for 'Ende Desespereert Nimmer' - And Never Despair).

In the lower leagues there's also the 1963-64 Eredivisie champions DWS (Door Wilskracht Sterk - Through Willpower Strong) from Amsterdam, Bergen Op Zoom's
DOSKO (Door Ons Samenspel Komt Overwinning - From Our Playing-Together Comes Triumph) and the delightful AGOVV - Alleen Gezamenlijk Oefenen Voert

I wouldn't have mentioned it if Wikipedia hadn't listed the venerable RSSSF as their source!
You can actually find lots of references to MYOB matches in digitized Surinamese archives. They really appear to have been genuine.
