Sad that he needed such a messy method. Not to mention even more
distressing to others close to him than alternative ways.

As someone who was diagnosed with a critical illness (fortunatly
successfully treated so far) I can agree with everything said above.
I know that if it had come to it I would have wanted to decide when it was
time to go.

I probably would too, although I'd like to think I might do it in a way
that didn't involve people having to wash bits of me off the walls
afterwards.

As to your objection ("messy method"), yes, but it
does have the very positive advantage as to very high
chance of successfully completing the mission,
(around 82%) and being quick.

Sadly, too many try neater and cleaner methods, and fail,
and some linger as vegetables for sadly too long.

In Japan firearms are much more limited, cliffs
and jumping in front of fast transportation
is very messy, traumatic, and damaging.

At least it was done with the knowledge of his relatives & he had a
process to say goodby properly.
when a family member does this unnecessarily & without warning (mental
health issues) it is devastating to the rest of the family, something else
I have first hand experience of :-(
