When you hear the headline about a contract, the details are a twisted
version of the truth that is pushed by an agent with an agenda.
Here are a few contracts I checked into recently.

In many cases, I disagree strongly with the headline.

Davante Adams

Announced as 5 years for $141.25M for APY of $28.25M

Mostly Guaranteed: $67.5M over 3 years for APY of $22.5M
Incentives Likely: $0.25M annually for making the pro bowl
Option Years Unlikely: 2025 @ $36.24M, 2026 @ $36.25M

Verdict: 3 years at $22.75M

**********************

J.C. Jackson

Announced as 5 years for $82.5M for APY of $16.5M

Mostly Guaranteed: $40M for 2 years for APY of $20M
Option Years: 2024 @ $14.4M, 2025 @ $14M, 2026 @ $14M
Notes: Jackson may view option years as fake years and demand a new contract.

Verdict: 2 years @ $20M

**********************

JuJu Smith-Schuster

Announced as 1 year for $10.75M

Mostly Guaranteed: 1 year for $3.25M for APY of $3.25M
Incentives Iffy: $7.5M unknown incentives, including $2m+ that require Chiefs in AFC championship game

Early Verdict: 1 year @ $3.25M

**********************

Matthew Stafford

Announced as $160M for 4 years for APY of $40M.

total: $160M over 4 years

Mostly guaranteed: $129M over 3 years for APY of $43M
Option Year: 2025 @ $31M

Verdict: 4 years @ $40M

**********************

Sebastian Joseph

Announced as $24M for 3 years for APY of $8M

Mostly Guaranteed: $16.5M for 2 years for APY of $8.25M
Option Year: 2024 @ $7.5M

Verdict: 3 years @ $8M

**********************

Von Miller

Announced as 6 years for $120M for APY of $20M

Mostly Guaranteed: $52.5M over 3 years = $17.5M / year
Option Years Unlikely: 2025 @ $21.5M, 2026 @ $24M, 2027 @ $34M

Verdict: 3 years @ $17.5M

**********************

And I saved the worst for last. When they offer unasked that it is not
about the money, it is always about the money.

Aaron Rodgers

Announced as 3 years for $150M for APY of $50M

Mostly Guaranteed: $75.4M for 1 year [2023] for APY of $75.4M
Option Year: 2024 @ $69M, would change APY to $62.2M

Important Notes:
$16M of the $75.4M paid early and Rodgers gets to keep it
if he retires, without even playing at all in 2024.
Rodgers was already under contract for $26M to be paid in 2020, plus other
money paid early, so 2022 was not a fake year in previous contract.

Verdict: 2 years @ $62.2M,

but could easily be 0 years for $16M or 1 year for $75.4M

I agree, all that really matters is the guaranteed money. Otherwise, the
$10M (formerly) owed Bulaga for next season can just ... disappear.
