From the Athletic:

Chargers select Boston College OG Zion Johnson at No. 17

A three-year starter at Boston College, Johnson lined up at left guard
in former offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti’s zone-based
(inside/outside) scheme. A golf-focused athlete in high school, he bet
on himself going from the FCS level to an FBS program known for
producing NFL offensive linemen and he developed into one of the top
offensive linemen in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Johnson has a stout, developed body type with the patience and placement
to plant and re-leverage himself to stay centered as a pass blocker. In
the run game, he shows off his body control and drive strength to
execute from various angles. Overall, Johnson will occasionally lose his
balance, but his combination of play strength, muscle twitch, and
reaction skills help him sustain as both a pass and run blocker. He has
the talent to carve out a decade-long career as an interior NFL blocker.

Interesting pick with Penning and McDuffie both still on the board. Really not sure what the plan is at RT, but they definitely needed an upgrade at guard as well.

I hope he's as good as Trevor Penning.

Per Popper:

Tom Telesco said Chargers view Zion Johnson as a right guard.

Telesco added they are not planning on any changes to left side. So
Feiler stays at LG. And it’s Trey Pipkins and Storm Norton competing at
RT. At least for now ..

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Pipkins or Norton couldn't cut the mustard last year, so
what changed since January to make Telasco think they'll be adequate this year?

Norton is awful, but I thought Pipkins actually looked OK in a couple of
appearances towards the end of the season. Maybe he's finally being
coached up? And there will still be players being cut as the season
approaches. Maybe there will be a decent tackle in there.

Perhaps. I still think Penning was the choice to nail down the RT spot, then find
a guard later on.

I was surprised also, but the Chargers made their pick in under two
minutes, so they knew who they wanted. Zion seems like more of a sure
thing than Penning, even though guards aren't as highly regarded.

Telesco had a funny line at his post-draft news conference last night,
according to Popper: "Guards are people too."

Yeah good guards are crucial as well, they don't get the glamor of tackles who usually are directly challenged by premier edge rushers, but it's basically impossible to have a great running game without a corresponding level of guard play. You can scheme to hide the deficiencies of a RT somewhat, but hopefully Pipkins does continue to develop and becomes a feasible starter and/or they find a good prospect in the 3rd or 4th round. Or a late cut from another team as you mentioned.

This makes a lot of sense from the Bleacher Report...

"The Los Angeles Chargers have an interesting decision in front of them
after drafting Johnson.

The coaching staff can immediately insert the rookie into the left guard
spot and bump Matt Feiler to right tackle, where he’s previously
experienced success as a member of the Pittsburgh Stelers. Or, Johnson
can play right guard and solidify the interior, though right tackle
would remain a problem area.

Either way, the Chargers are now much stronger along the interior
because Johnson looks like a future 10-year starter."

I think they're going to try to leave Slater--Feiler--Lindsay as they
were, plug in Zion at RG, and hope they can solve the RT issue.

The draft guru at The Athletic mocked the Chargers to take a tackle
tonight in the 3rd round:

Abraham Lucas, OT, Washington State

Even after drafting an offensive lineman in the first round in Boston
College guard Zion Johnson, the Chargers could target an offensive
tackle at 79 to compete with Trey Pipkins and Storm Norton for the
starting right tackle spot. Lucas has an enticing frame at over
6-foot-6, 316 pounds with 34-inch arms. He is a smooth mover for his
size and started 42 games at right tackle in college.

More from Popper:

Daniel Popper @danielrpopper

Fun facts from Zion Johnson intro presser:

• Has an undergrad degree in computer science and masters degree in
cybersecurity
• Programs in his free time and knows Java, Python, Javascript among
other coding languages
• Wears No. 77 because of Cowboys OT Tyron Smith

https://twitter.com/danielrpopper/status/1520158688245272576

He already has a masters degree?! He must be quite intelligent.

Damn, he's only 22 years old. Must have done undergrad in 3 years, and I can attest that is NOT an easy degree.
