From Daniel Popper, the Chargers' beat writer at The Athletic:

Chargers receivers led the league in drops last year with 38. Herbert
had 15 interceptions last year — a number bloated by tipped balls on
some of those drops. That total should decrease in 2022.

That's what I suspected, but I thought it was just my bad attitude.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah, it's not like the 15 INTs (in 17 games) was a huge increase from his rookie year, when he had 10 INTs in 15 games. His INT% went from 1.7% to 2.2%, dropping him from 12th to 17th in the category per Pro Football Reference. At the same time, he improved from 14th to 8th in TD% (going from 5.2% to 5.7%). Josh Allen of Buffalo - who most pundits said established himself alongside Patrick Mahomes as a top tier QB - had the same number of INTs and two fewer TDs on a very similar number of attempts, finishing just behind Herbert in both % categories.

The reason a reduction in drops might lower his INT total is not because of tipped balls - which are generally flukes and not consistent from year to year - but because fewer drops might put them in more favorable down and distance situations. I think Herbert is going to have double digit picks most years though - he's a lot more Brett Favre than he is Aaron Rodgers imo.

Michael
