The Chargers made a handful of roster moves Monday, trimming their total
number of players from 90 to 85.

The Bolts announced they have released safety Skyler Thomas, wide
receiver Maurice Ffrench and quarterback Brandon Peters. Defensive
lineman Forrest Merrill and center Isaac Weaver have been placed on the
Waived/Injured list.

The roster moves come before Tuesday's league-mandated deadline that
says all NFL rosters must be at 85 players before 1 p.m. (PT).

Thomas, an undrafted rookie out of Liberty, played four defensive snaps
in Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams.

Ffrench played 32 snaps Saturday and did not have a catch on one target.
He appeared in three games for the Chargers in 2021, recording one rush
for three yards.

Peters was added as an undrafted free agent this spring after a college
career that saw him play at Michigan and Indiana. He did not play
Saturday and had not participated team drills in training camp.

Merrill and Weaver also did not play Saturday against the Rams. Merrill
spent most of the 2021 season on the Chargers practice squad but played
in four games. Weaver was an undrafted free agent from Old Dominion.

The Chargers now have three quarterbacks, nine wide receivers, 13
offensive linemen, nine defensive linemen and 16 defensive backs on the
team.

The Bolts roster now stands at 85 players, a group that includes
linebacker Kenneth Murray (on Active/Physically Unable to Perform list)
and tight end Stone Smart (Active/Non-Football Injury list).

The next roster cutdown deadline is Aug. 23, when all teams must be down
to 80 players by 1 p.m. (PT).

The Bolts continue training camp practice Tuesday at Jack Hammett Sports
Complex before hosting the Cowboys for joint practices Wednesday and
Thursday.

Saturday night's preseason game between the Chargers and Cowboys kicks
off at 7 p.m. (CT) from SoFi Stadium.

I think they keep 3 QBs, 4 RBs, 1 FB, 9 OL, 6 WR, and 3 TEs from this group for a total of 26.

Here I think they go with 5 DL, 4 EDGE, 5 LBs, 6 CBs, and 4 S for a total of 24.

Obviously I expect Hopkins, Harris, and Scott to make the team and round out the 53-man roster.

Several decisions to be made here: 2 or 3 QBs, 5 or 6 WRs, 3 or 4 TEs.
Popper says that the Chargers like to keep four TEs, although only the
first three listed are proven to any degree. I really hope that they
keep a 6th WR because both Bandy and Reed have looked good. I have
wondered if they could keep both and cut Guyton. I'm not sure what
Guyton's ceiling is; Reed would be his replacement as a speed receiver
and as a bonus could also be a returner.

I think 4 RBs, 1 FB and 9 OL are much guaranteed.

I'd say only three of the DL are assured of roster spots (Johnson,
Joseph-Day, and Fox) but I could see them keeping six.

At edge, the top four are obvious, but I've also been hearing good
things about Jamal Davis.

If they go with either 6 DL or 5 Edge, then they would pretty much have
to keep only 4 ILBs.

Keeping only four ILBs is at least a possibility, since Van Noy can play
inside and James will often be used close to the line of scrimmage.
Because the Chargers are in nickle and dime so much, they had only 1.5
ILBs on the field on average last season.

I agree on 10 DBs but it could be five and five. At CB, Jackson, Samuel,
Davis, and Callahan are locks, and I think Ja’Sir Taylor is a virtual
lock. Beyond that, Tevaughn Campbell and Kemon Hall are possibilities
but not sure things.
