Sources saying he'll reject the QO...Mayer is usually reliable. Guess he doesn't want to bet on himself turning it around for a cool $20 million.

Nice player who I can't say anything negative about, but not a guy to
devote a large chunk of payroll. Just one of many positions the Mets
need an upgrade at.

He is more than that,, much more. But after this last season, you would
be an idiot to give him a big contract. The thing that makes me really
irrate about this is that they fucked up Conforto. I am sure of it. He
had awesome opposite field power and a level swing that they all but
eliminated. He will sign with the Braves and be a 350 hitter.

Everyone who comes to the Mets gets fucked up. They ruin players over
and over again.

Other than Carlos Beltran, I can't think of one star player the Mets
had who had their best offensive seasons with them. Not Staub, Foster,
Carter, Hernandez, Vaughn, or Piazza. Strawberry maybe was a push,
only because drugs f**ked up his post-Mets career.

Its not just that, but you see players go to the Braves and Cardinals
and Dodgers and Reds they improve. Even in Washington. Granted that
the Cards used Steroids and probably still do, and I don't want that,
but the fact remains that the Mets screw up ballplayers, especially
hitters, over and over again. Jeremy Burnetz comes to mind.

You rarely get the best years out of a free agent, but the other teams
pull players who underachive and transform them.

You can visable SEE how they screwed up Conforto over the years as he
progressed from a David Wright/Piazza type hitter to a whiff machine
alway always always pullling the ball. They did the same thing the Jeff
McNeil.

Conforto had a lower-than-his-average SO ratio in 2021. By year...2015-20.1%, 2016-25.6%, 2017-25.7%, 2018-24.9%, 2019-23.0%, 2020-24.5%....and in 2021 he had a K rate of 21.7%. He's no more a "whiff machine" than he ever was, or anyone else for that matter, as he was right near the league avg. In fact, his highest K rate (over 25%) came in 2017 when he had a OPS+ of 148 in 440 PA. In 2021 he was actually lower in K % than his career average. Also funny is his pull % in 2021(31.6%) was LOWER than than his prior career average (32.6%). Your "always always always pulling the ball" remark just doesn't fly. He actually pulled the ball LESS this past season than he did for the 1st 6 years of his career.

Bottom line...who knows what's wrong, who fucked him up, or did he simply have a single bad year in an otherwise 124 OPS+ career. By turning down the QO, he's gambling other teams see this past season as an aberration and fork over $150MM or so. He'll probably get it and land somewhere in the division to haunt us for the next 6 years or so.

A pleasure to read a well-reasoned post here.

If you are going to add in Vaughn then it is fair to add in Todd
Hundley. Regardless, they are have a huge track record of killing
hitters. Justin Turner, Kevin Mitchel, Carlos Gomez, Melvin Mora, Greg
Jefferies, Robin Ventura, Jeff Kent, Jason Bay, Carl Everett, Roberto
Alomar, and Ángel Pagán and the names go on...

Just like when these mediocre players put Yankee pinstripes on, they
become stars, the opposite happens with the Mets. It's amazing how
many players can be listed
