Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero

A bunch of salary conversions filed overnight to clear 2023 cap space:

Chargers WRs Keenan Allen (cleared $8.9 million) and Mike Williams
(cleared $5.46M)

https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1633816939590975488

Field Yates @FieldYates

The Chargers restructured WRs Keenan Allen’s and Mike Wiliams’ deal,
creating $14.3775M in cap space.

https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1633798630753574915

Field Yates @FieldYates

Chargers GM Tom Telesco had previously made it very clear he was not
trading Keenan Allen. This restructure is another reminder of that.

Allen and Williams are under contract through 2024. Their new 2024 cap
numbers:

Allen: $34.7175M
Williams: $32.46M

Here's what their restructured contracts look like (huge cap hits for
both in 2024, the last year of their contract for both players, Allen
$34.7M, Williams $32.46M):

Allen: https://overthecap.com/player/keenan-allen/2227

Williams: https://overthecap.com/player/mike-williams/5591

I'm hearing conflicting reports on what those huge cap hits mean. Some people seem to think it means there's 0 chance either guy is on the roster in 2024, and others seem to think it means Allen at least will be a Charger for his entire career. I guess they are giving themselves the option to sign them to an extension and convert some of that 2024 salary to a signing bonus that can be spread out, reducing the immediate cap hit. Either way, it sounds like they're giving themselves one year, MAYBE two with the current coaching staff and roster and if they don't get there they'll blow it up and only Justin Herbert will still be there in 2025.

Those huge cap numbers are idiotic. I don't mean the decisions, I mean
the numbers themselves.

Suppose you eat at 6 restaurants and spend $50 at each, put on a credit
card. When the payment comes due, the credit card company allows you to
put one of them on layaway, at your choice, so you designate one. You
pay $250 now and have to pay an extra $50 when your next cycle comes
due. Does it make any difference at all which restaurant you marked for
layaway? Would you view that restaurant as more expensive the next time
you eat there just because you checked it as the one for layaway? The
only thing that matters is that you paid $250 and owe another $50 next time.

Pretending that the cap hits for delayed money apply to particular
players is merely bureaucratic nonsense. The only time the cap hit
should be tied to the player is in cases where if the player retired
the team would have the right to make him pay it back. Any dead cap hit
should be viewed as a team statistic, not a player statistic. There can
be a small difference when you cut a player really early in a long
contract, but it's generally not worth thinking about.

Certainly seems like a "we'll worry about next season next season" move.

Chargers are still $6M over cap and need to clear $13M, per Popper, to
pay draft picks and have $4M free cap for next season:

https://twitter.com/danielrpopper/status/1633889585079140352

If they want to sign some free agents, like their own, they'll need to
clear at least $20M (my guess).
