SAN FRANCISCO — Andre Iguodala’s absence has extended longer than
initially anticipated, but the Golden State Warriors expect to get the
veteran swingman back on the court in short order, possibly as early as
their next contest.

Coach Steve Kerr said Tuesday that Iguodala’s sore right knee has abated
in recent days and that it’s a “possibility” he could be available
Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers, the finale of a four-game
homestand. If not Wednesday, then likely some point on Golden State’s
upcoming five-game road trip, Kerr said.

“He’s getting a lot better,” Kerr said. “He’s been on the court now for
the last four or five days getting shots up. He’s made great improvement
and should be playing soon.”

The 37-year-old Iguodala was on his own court Tuesday afternoon during
the portion of practice open to the media, going through individual
shooting drills. He hasn’t played since the Warriors’ win at Brooklyn
three weeks ago, but last week began ramping up his activity at practice.

There’s a “possibility” that Andre Iguodala returns Wednesday vs.
Portland, Steve Kerr said. A sore right knee has kept him out the past
10 games.

The issue has to do with swelling in his right knee, Kerr said previously.

The Warriors entered the season with a plan to keep Iguodala fresh for
the playoff hunt come springtime. Like other veterans, Iguodala was to
get strategic rest days, here and there, like he did at Sacramento and
home against Houston.

An extended absence this early in the season wasn’t what either party
had in mind.

Despite that, the Warriors are 8-2 over their past 10 games and 12-2
without Iguodala in the lineup. That’s no indictment of his play on the
court — which teammates and coaches agree has shown a renewed vigor —
but maybe an encouraging sign and one more reason not to rush him back.

Iguodala’s defense, intelligence and shooting ability have all been
missed, but his leadership remains in the locker room and on the bench,
even if it has recently been disguised in street clothes.

Rookies Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody have picked up some of
Iguodala’s minutes, but neither will be with the Warriors against
Portland; they will play with G League Santa Cruz on its road trip to
Los Angeles.

Otto Porter Jr., who sat out Saturday’s game against San Antonio and
missed all four of his attempts from the field in 19 minutes Monday, is
expected to be good to go Wednesday, Kerr said.
