They better get off to a 4-0 or at least 3-1 start, because after the early bye week that schedule looks pretty rough. I know I said I'd predict them to go 7-10 if they kept Staley, but the change at OC has me (stupidly?) optimistic that they can win 10 or 11 and get a wild card spot again.

Doug Kezirian, Tyler Fulghum, Erin Dolan and Eric Moody offer their advice on whether you should take the over, under or stay away from each team's total.

Los Angeles Chargers

Over/under: 9.5
Mike Clay's projection: 9.9

Prediction: Over 9.5 wins. The Chargers are poised for a strong season in 2023. With the addition of Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator and a solid offensive line, quarterback Justin Herbert has the potential to thrive, especially with a healthy Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. The Chargers' defense also has a lot of potential and can become a force under the guidance of head coach Brandon Staley and new defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley. All in all, Los Angeles is a strong contender for the AFC West title, and betting on it to surpass 9.5 wins is a wise choice. -- Moody

Usually these ESPN win totals are clearly ridiculous without even
reading any analyses, because they predict that the leagues as a whole
will have substantially more wins than losses. I think in the last 16
game season they predicted an average of 9 wins per team.

Assuming I transcribed correctly, I got a total of 273.5 wins predicted
for 272 games. That's not terrible. I guess their betting analysts are a
whole lot better than their team reporters.

I still remember several years ago (16 game schedule) Colin Cowherd gave his predicted record for every team in one segment, I think he ended up with the league as a whole being something like 20 games over .500 lol.

Back when Deadspin was Deadspin (i.e. breaking the Manti Te'o story, Brett Favre sexting scandal, etc.) they used to run a regular column about the NFL schedule release called "Your Football team Will Win 11, Maybe 12 Games This Year" lampooning the tendency among sports pundits to overrate everyone's chances.
