The Warriors’ early-season rampage through the NBA hit another speed bump Sunday.

Andrew Wiggins joined teammate Jordan Poole in the league’s health and safety protocols, leaving the Warriors without two regular starters for Monday night’s home game against Sacramento. The team placed Poole in the protocols Friday.

Wiggins appeared on Golden State’s injury report, which was posted on nba.com at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. He and Poole both are listed as out for the game against the Kings.

The Warriors (24-6) will begin the week not knowing how long Poole and Wiggins might be sidelined. According to NBA guidelines, a player who tests positive for the coronavirus must isolate until 10 days have passed from that test or the onset of symptoms, or until he tests negative on two PCR tests 24 hours apart.

Wiggins, 26, has enjoyed a strong season for the Warriors, averaging 18.7 points and 4.5 rebounds while routinely defending the opponent’s top perimeter player. He’s shooting a career-high 49.1% from the field, including 42.2% on 3-point attempts.

Poole is averaging 17.9 points per game, putting him third on the team behind Stephen Curry (27.0) and Wiggins. Damion Lee started in Poole’s place in Saturday night’s 119-100 loss to Toronto.

Wiggins also missed that game, as the Warriors rested several players including Curry and Draymond Green. Jonathan Kuminga started at small forward in Wiggins’ absence and scored 26 points; Kuminga seems like the most logical option to replace Wiggins on Monday night.

Wiggins caused a stir before the season with his reluctance to get vaccinated. If he had remained unvaccinated, he would have been ineligible to play in home games at Chase Center, given San Francisco’s public-health rules, but he ultimately relented and became vaccinated.

Asked after Friday night’s win in Boston whether he’s glad he did, given the omicron variant and a recent surge in coronavirus cases, Wiggins said, “No, I’m not. … It is what it is, I guess.”

Sunday’s news on Wiggins came amid a spike in positive coronavirus tests throughout the NBA and other professional sports leagues. More than 50 NBA players, plus three head coaches (Indiana’s Rick Carlisle, the Lakers’ Frank Vogel and Sacramento’s Alvin Gentry), have entered the league’s health and safety protocols this month.

Among the teams dealing with outbreaks are the Bulls (who had 10 players sidelined and two games postponed), Nets, Hornets, Lakers, Kings and Celtics. And now the Warriors also find themselves short-handed.

“We’ve had a nice couple of months to start the year,” head coach Steve Kerr said Friday. “It felt relatively normal. Fans back in the stands. Great energy. A lot of quality play. Everything has felt really good, but this was always in the background.

“Obviously, the whole world is dealing with this latest surge. It affects every business. Some have it worse than others. It definitely affects ours. It’s up to all the players, coaches and management in the league to do our best to deal with it.”

The Warriors play three games this week: Monday night at home against Sacramento, Thursday night at home against Memphis and Saturday (Christmas Day) on the road against Phoenix. The Suns (23-5) are percentage points ahead of Golden State in the early race for the No. 1 seed in the West.

Next week, the Warriors play three more games against conference foes expected to contend for the playoffs: against Denver on Dec. 28 (home) and Dec. 30 (road), then at Utah on Jan. 1.
