I remember Briscoe but in my memory the first one was Joe Gilliam battleing Bradshaw to start for Pitt early in his career....of course the way i was raised.....when i was that young i wouldnt even know it was such "a big deal" until the announcers mentioned it. To me it was just one player battling another for a position. If i recall Gilliam had a lot of off the feild demons....drugs i think maybe gambling or both...

You misssed in the article he was the first in the AFL.

I'm not doubting he was, i'm just saying i remember him but not as "first starter".....i'm just saying in my memory.... in 1968 i dont remember much i was 4 most of the year! But i do remember him as a player. Tarkington was the first Giants QB i remember. Even the pics of YA Tittle seemed ancient to me back then but they were prolly only 5 years old at the time!
