WHY ARE THE CHARGERS A 3.5 POINT HOME DOG TODAY AGAINST THE SAINTS?

WHY ARE THE CHARGERS ONLY RANKED 13TH IN THE PRESEASON POWER RANKING?

Because Staley plays very few starters in preseason. And Derek Carr will likely play into the second quarter today as he continues to get used to the Saints' system.

My first thought is that power rankings - especially preseason - are utterly meaningless. My second thought is that the playoff meltdown has convinced most pundits that the Chargers, while talented, are not going to put it all together to be a viable Super Bowl contender. Seven teams finished with a better record than them last year, and of the teams that had the same or a worse record the Jaguars beat them in the playoffs, the Jets added Aaron Rodgers to a talented team, the Ravens added pieces and hope Lamar Jackson can stay healthy, the Browns will have Watson for a full season, and the Lions are a trendy pick based on how they finished last season - there are other teams you could make a case for as well. You could put the Chargers anywhere from 8 to 18 and probably not be hugely overrating or underrating them..

Sounds like a $100 Super Bowl bet would probably not have gone well.
But you know how it is with us gamblers.
We get one of those feelings and common sense be damned.

If you want to make crazy bets, how about picking the Steelers
or the Bears or the Patriots to win their divisions?

Those teams are all the highest payoffs in their respective divisions
and I can imagine scenarios where they could come in first.

I'll go out on a limb and say Chargers win 10 this year, lose to KC in the
first round but put on a good show. I don't like the Charger HC.
