Kurtenbach: The Warriors’ solution to their biggest problem? Ignore it
Golden State Warriors: Steph Curry and the Dubs turn the ball over at an
impressive clip To beat the Mavericks, that will have to stop. But
they're not talking about it ahead of Game 1 of the Western Conference
Finals.

SAN FRANCISCO — Luka Dončić is a force unlike any other in the NBA right
now. He can control the game with ease, get to any spot he wants on the
floor, and knock down shots that no one else would even dare attempt.

But Mavericks’ superstar point guard is not the Golden State Warriors’
biggest threat in their attempt to reach the NBA Finals. No, Golden
State’s top threat at the start of this Western Conference Finals series
with Dallas is themselves.

Specifically, all of their turnovers.

The Warriors have walked a fine under head coach Steve Kerr, who demands
the ball move around the court, a motion that, of course, comes with the
risk of the ball moving in the wrong direction, possessed by the other team.

It creates a dichotomy that no other team in the NBA can replicate.

The Warriors, at their best, play the most entertaining basketball
anyone has ever seen. It’s beautiful, egalitarian, floor-, banner-, and
arena-raising.

But the Warriors, at their careless worst, are also the most aggravating
team to watch in the entire league.

Warriors: Steph Curry says college degree was ‘long time coming’

Outside of Kerr’s first year at the helm, the Warriors have finished
outside of the NBA’s bottom-10 in turnovers per game only once — the
2019-20 season when Steph Curry missed all but five games.

This postseason, the Warriors are turning the ball over 16 times per
game — the highest mark of any league’s final four teams by 20 percent.
And in their series against Memphis, they were particularly careless
with the ball. In their blowout Game 5 loss, they turned the ball over
22 times — a huge reason why they trailed by as many as 55 points.

Kerr was sidelined for that Game 5 loss to Memphis. He had tested
positive for COVID-19 before Game 4 and was sitting at home, drinking a
beer.

As the Warriors turned the ball over again, and again, and again, Kerr —
ever the fiery competitor, even with a cold brew in his hand — nearly
broke his glass in frustration.

“The beer mug… was close to being shattered after a few of those
turnovers,” Kerr said Monday.

Against Dallas, the byproduct of the Warriors turning the ball over
could be an early summer break.

“Those guys will feed off of turnovers,” Warriors forward Draymond Green
said on his podcast. “It starts with me… I will be better in that area.”

But what’s Kerr’s message to the Warriors ahead of this series? What is
he telling the team to curtail their penchant for giving the ball to the
other team?

Nothing.

“I’m not even bringing them up,” Kerr said. “[Turnovers] have been the
number one key on our board for about 72 straight games. So there’s no
point. I think if I don’t say anything, then we’re going to take care of
the ball.”

It’s the exact opposite of what any other coach would do, and there’s
comedic validity to that play.

Kerr called it the Costanza Method — a call-back to the sitcom Seinfeld
where the consistently forlorn George Costanza decided to do the
opposite of what his instincts told him to do.

“If every instinct you had has been wrong, then the opposite has to be
right,” Jerry told George in the episode. How right he was.

Will the same tactics work for the Warriors?

At this point, it can’t hurt.
