Guard Quinndary Weatherspoon is returning to the Golden State Warriors on a two-way contract, a league source confirmed with The Chronicle on Friday night.

Barring an unforeseen change, Weatherspoon, 25, will be the first player in NBA history to spend at least part of four straight seasons on a two-way deal. This comes after he vetted the free-agency market for more than a month and didn’t receive any minimum-contract offers.

Given that the Warriors made Weatherspoon restricted by extending him a two-way qualifying offer, other teams were less likely to give him a minimum deal. They knew that Golden State could match any offer they gave him.

Though Weatherspoon believed he had done enough to graduate from a two-way contract to a standard NBA deal, he is not necessarily locked into a two-way. Such contracts are often fluid, with teams not out any money if they cut someone from a two-way or convert a two-way to a standard deal.

Whether Weatherspoon stays on a two-way could come down to how he and others look in training camp. The Warriors are bringing in guard Mac McClung on a non-guaranteed, standard deal to compete for a roster spot. Undrafted Purdue center Trevion Williams has agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract and will also be invited to training camp, a league source confirmed.

The Warriors have 13 players on guaranteed contracts, with Weatherspoon and guard Lester Quinones filling the two two-way deals. Given that the team is already deep into the luxury tax, it will likely enter the season with just 14 players on the 15-man roster.

Regardless of his contract status, Weatherspoon should have a shot at meaningful minutes. He excelled in limited playing time with the big club last season. While with Golden State’s G League affiliate, Weatherspoon dominated, averaging 25.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals in 20 games.
