Golden State Warriors training camp is officially underway, and head coach Steve Kerr described the team’s first session on Saturday morning inside Chase Center as a “heavy load day” for the team.

Kerr was satisfied with the group’s energy and effort, but said the live portions of practice were pretty much one-sided. It was basically the team’s veterans versus their youngsters and newcomers in scrimmages, and the veterans handled business soundly.

“The group that just won the title a few months ago basically dominated practice, as they should,” Kerr said. “Everybody looks really good and ready to go and the young guys have to learn from the older guys, so it’s going to be a fun team to coach.”

Kerr added that Draymond Green, who’s coming off a significant back injury last season, looked “fantastic” physically and was his usual vocal self. Green spent the offseason training those small muscle groups in his back and said on a recent episode of the “Checc’n In” podcast that he believes he’s now in ideal shape entering the 2022-23 campaign.

“His body looks good,” Kerr said. “He’s really moving well, both laterally and sprint-speed up and down the floor. He was mentoring the young guys and coaching them up in drill work. And on the floor, his team, the blue team with (Kevon) Looney, Stephen (Curry) and (Andrew) Wiggins, that group, they just demolished everything.”

Kerr also mentioned Curry, Wiggins and Looney among Day 1 practice standouts. Looney told reporters that Moses Moody looked confident and Jonathan Kuminga’s athleticism turned some heads inside the practice gym per usual. However, he was most impressed by second-round pick Ryan Rollins, who showcased a good feel for the game and a natural scoring ability. Rollins was held out of summer league because of a stress fracture in his right foot..

Andre Iguodala, who announced he’d be returning for his 19th NBA season on Friday, wasn’t at practice on Saturday and is expected to officially join the team on Monday. The Warriors will travel to Tokyo on Tuesday to face the Washington Wizards in preseason games on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.

“We’ll ease back tomorrow and the following day so we can get to Tokyo on Tuesday and hopefully have the aches and pains simmering at least by that point instead of boiling,” Kerr said. “But that first day of camp is always fun, had a lot of good energy and we had a really good day.”
