Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters Friday in New Orleans that Klay Thompson might not play in back-to-back games this season as he continues to work his way back into form following two devastating injuries.

When asked about that following Sunday’s practice, Thompson said he’d love to play in back-to-backs if healthy and the decision was up to him. But it’s not. Instead, Rick Celebrini, Golden State’s director of sports medicine and performance, has the say-so — and Thompson trusts that Celebrini will have him peaking at the right time, just like last season.

“You hate being on the road and not playing for the away fans because they want to see us out there, especially the defending champs, so it never sits right with me,” Thompson said. “But I also understand we have a huge goal and that’s winning a championship. So maybe it’s not full-throttle just yet, but as the season wears on and I get that peak physical shape — which I’m very close to — it would be nice to play in some of those. Maybe not all of them, but a good amount.”

Thompson, 32, is averaging 15 points on 36% shooting (32% from 3-point range) in eight games. He scored a season-high 27 in Thursday’s loss in Orlando. He was 10-of-24 from the field and set season bests with seven threes and 34 minutes of playing time.

“I thought I was in a great rhythm,” he said. “I mean, the shots I took were great ones. When I re-watched the film, I think I might’ve taken two bad field goals, so as long as I’m getting great looks I’m confident they will fall at a high rate.

DiVincenzo update: Donte DiVincenzo, who’s missed seven consecutive games because of a strained left hamstring, practiced Sunday but didn’t participate in any live drills. Kerr said the 25-year-old is “looking better” but won’t play Monday against the Kings at Chase Center. He might return Friday against Cleveland.

Kuminga’s turn: Kerr made it clear after last week’s 0-5 East Coast trip that changes are coming. He didn’t reveal all of the adjustments, but did guarantee that second-year forward Jonathan Kuminga ’s role will expand.

After not playing in Golden State’s previous two games, Kuminga scored a season-high 18 and logged a career-high 38 minutes in Friday’s loss in New Orleans. Kerr said Kuminga would get an opportunity as long as he stayed patient.
