SAN FRANCISCO — Gary Payton II will miss the Warriors’ crucial Game 3 of
their first round playoff series against the Sacramento Kings with an
illness. The illness kept Payton from practice on Wednesday, head coach
Steve Kerr said.

Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole started after both were listed as
questionable in the hours prior to tip off with shoulder soreness and an
ankle sprain, respectively. Kerr noted that Poole was playing on a
swollen ankle in Game 2, which partly contributed to his four-point
performance in 16 minutes.

The Warriors opted for offense by playing a hobbled Poole alongside
Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Kevon Looney in the
starting lineup to make up for Draymond Green’s absence.

Payton’s absence exacerbates an already depleted Warriors team playing
without Green due to a one-game suspension. Concerns surrounded Golden
State’s defensive capabilities against the fast-paced Kings without both
Green and Payton.

Payton returned to the Warriors in a trade at the deadline from the
Portland Trail Blazers because of his strong defense, particularly at
the point of attack. Payton played 27 minutes in Game 2 with 13 points,
six rebounds and two steals. He played 20 minutes in Game 1 with eight
points, four rebounds and two steals.

The NBA suspended Green at the midnight hour on Tuesday night after an
entanglement in Game 2 with Kings center Domantas Sabonis in which Green
stomped on Sabonis’ chest. The league said his egging the crowd on after
being issued a Flagrant 2 foul and his past offenses led to the one-game
suspension. Green participated in Wednesday’s practice and is watching
Game 3 from his home, Kerr said.

Sabonis, who had X-rays on his chest after Game 2, was active for
Thursday’s game at Chase Center.
