States that have lost population according to at least one US census since 1900:

Mississippi (1920,1950,1960,2020)
North Dakota (1910,1950,1970,1990)
West Virginia (1960,1979,1990,2020)

Arkansas (1950,1960)
Iowa (1910,1990)
Nevada (1900,1920)
Oklahoma (1940,1950)
South Dakota (1940,1970)
Vermont (1920,1940)

Illinois (2020)
Kansas (1940)
Michigan (2010)
Montana (1930)
Nebraska (1940)
New York (1980)
Wyoming (1990)

The 1940 census had the highest number of shrinking states (six). The 1950 and 1990 censuses had the next highest (four). The 2000 census was the only one, since 1900, without a shrinking state. West Virginia in 1990 had the largest drop in population (156,167 people). Nevada in 1900 had the largest percentage drop (10.6%).

I'm not sure how this data is useful. Some of these states must have had
gains in population that are more recent. Also...recent gossip says that
many are leaving CA for TX. No mention of that? I already knew that
Americans are always on the move, so to speak.

I don't trust the 2020 numbers. I get the feeling (that means "no evidence but I've heard....") that the census was poorly handled, possibly on purpose.

Lots of those feelings going around on multiple subjects.

Some of the previous century’s biggest movement of people show up in the data, like Okies moving west during the depression and black migrations out of the south. Also, it shows periods of economic struggle in places tied to industries such as cotton, coal, and cars. Also, NYC got pretty wild in the 1970s, and that shows up here. I don’t think it’s surprising that Mississippi and West Virginia show up at the top.

Also, it shows periods of economic struggle in places tied to industries such as cotton, coal, and cars. Also, NYC got pretty wild in the 1970s, and that shows up here. I don’t think it’s surprising that Mississippi and West Virginia show up at the top.

Also, the invention and implementation of air condition might explain some of the northern states.

California’s population is still growing.

They aren’t losing the house seat because they are shrinking. They’re
losing it because their rate of population growth has fallen behind other
states.

Air conditioning probably helps explain those states’ population growth (along with other factors of course). And then migration into those states might in turn explain some of the migration out of the northern states that show up here. Florida Man had to come from somewhere.
