Total Medals

1. US
2. China
3. Russian Olympic Cheaters
4. Great Britain
5. Japan

Medals per million people

1. San Marino
2. Bermuda
3. Bahamas
4. New Zealand
5. Jamaica

Medals per per-capita GDP

1. China
2. ROC
3. Kenya
4. Ukraine
5. Uganda

If you paid any attention to medal counts the past few Olympics, then the first list is probably not surprising. It’s like if next year’s playoff teams are Bama, OSU, Clemson, and OU. The next two lists make sense but seem to involve a weirder mix of countries.

Heres the article with more details…

good for San Marino, getting two people to win medals. The GDP thing is pointless, in my opinion. Population, sure. GDP? Nah, don't see what difference it makes. Bermuda won one medal.

Whenever I see ROC I assume Taiwan (Republic of Chain) but apparently it means the Russians who were banned and technically not at the Olympics, but it turns out there were after all.

ROC shouldn't have any GDP.

These lists assume that all medals are equal. I may start believing that when both Roy Jones Jr. and the surviving members of the 1972 USA men's basketball team announce that they are just as happy with the silver medals they received as with any gold medal that was "stolen" from them.

Here are a couple of other lists:

Number of athletes winning at least one gold medal:
USA - 102
Japan - 66
France - 64
China - 53
Great Britain - 38

Gold medals per million people, if you cap every country at a minimum of 6 million (which is about the median population of the attending countries), so as not to have a really small country have an overstated effect (with ties broken by smaller actual population):
1. New Zealand, 1.1667
2. Jamaica, 0.6667
3. Norway, 0.6667
4. Australia, 0.6592
5. Hungary, 0.6228

at least one gold medal since....? That's not these Olympics so it must be some other tally. If this was the 32nd Olympiad then it can't be the all-time total.

This is strictly in 2021. 102 different USA athletes won a gold medal in the 2021 Olympics. Remember, this includes 12 men's basketball players, 12 women's basketball players, 12 women's volleyball players, 13 women's water polo players, and in swimming and track & field relays, the runners/swimmers in the preliminary heat get gold medals as well, so that's up to 8 per event as well.

Also note that this is not counting multiple medals by the same athlete separately; Caleb Dressel is counted just once, even though he won five gold medals. If you count each individual gold medal separately, I think it's 114..

Apparently there’s a correlation between wealth and Olympic success.. Of course, it could be an example of correlation is not causation, or there could be some lurking variables (eg sports that Europeans favor may be the overrepresented in the Olympics and European countries tend to be wealthy), but I can think of some reasons of how wealth could directly impact Olympic success. Here’s an excerpt from the article that addresses this issue…

“But population, by itself, is not enough to guarantee a country sweeps the podium.
"If a country is very poor, it won't have the resources to convert that potential into actual ability to compete on a world stage," says Mr Forrest.
"They've got to have the ability to participate in sport in the first place.. For example, they might have a great natural ability in swimming that is waiting to be developed - but actually there won't be any swimming pools."
When poorer countries do win, they tend to win at sports that are lower-cost, like wrestling, he says, while wealthy countries outperform in expensive sports like equestrian and sailing.”

I don’t know about the rest of the events, but for women’s gymnastics, your list is missing Grace McCallum, Jordan Chiles and Simone Biles who along with Suni Lee won silver in the team gymnastics final. Simone Biles also won bronze as a individual on the balance beam.

Oh. Reading is fundamental. Never mind then.

Remember, this includes 12 men's basketball players, 12 women's basketball players, 12 women's volleyball players, 13 women's water polo players, and in swimming and track & field relays, the runners/swimmers in the preliminary heat get gold medals as well, so that's up to 8 per event as well.

ah, I see now that it includes the team sports. I knew we didn't win 102 gold medals but I see how that works out.

This would be a really good example if someone from a smaller country kept winning Bronze because the country that won gold and silver could only send two athletes to the event
to compete, so the bronze winner was never really the third best in the world.

Because that's Oklahoma....they've obviously made the playoffs a lot more than Georgia, but thats just a result of conference affiliation and scheduling
and not because they are better than Georgia over that time(or even as good) or one of the top 4 teams in the country.
