tldr: How long does back pain last, if you strain the old musculus quadratus lumborum? I don't think anything is too terribly wrong. I have had pain like this, for a shorter period, with back spasms (which, I've heard, are caused by stress). This isn't that and it's been hurting for about two weeks now. I have a doctor's appointment on Friday, next week, for something else, so he'll have something to say probably.

So I did something to my back a couple of weekends ago. I was cutting down the kudzu vines growing in the evergreens behind my house. Our house is on a ridge. Behind our house are the aforementioned evergreens and a steep drop-off from the ridge, to a busy street.

I lost my balance standing on the uneven ground and turned quickly to grab a vine (that luckily had not been cut yet) and yanked myself back upright. I briefly envisioned my gruesome death as I fell and rolled about 20 feet into the street, only to get smashed to bits by the hooligans, the soccer moms, the angry white men, the OGs, the FedEx trucks, the Amazon vans, the Uber SUVs, etc. that go way too fast down this street.

I didn't hear anything crack or pop, which is not to say that didn't happen because.. well, because of these cars going by with their speakers rattling the neighborhood and disturbing everyone, I guess, either a lack of mufflers, or some aftermarket crap that makes a 4-cylinder rice burner sound like a tractor.

I didn't feel too bad after finishing the job, but the next morning I woke up and had to walk doubled over for two days. It got marginally better, but it's been two weeks and at the end of the day, standing up from sitting for hours at my clerking machine, I have to stoop to walk again, because it hurts so much. I took some mild muscle relaxers, but those just make me depressed, and don't do much for the pain.

Hard to say how long it might last. Probably muscular so I doubt an
x-ray would show anything. You might want to talk with the DR's office
in advance to see if he would prescribe an x-ray or MRI in stead of
waiting to see him.

You can try ibuprofen a few times a day to see if that helps.

Depends on how old you are. If you're over 65 it could last a long time.

I had one of those old man mysterious sprains recently. Woke up with it
after sleeping in a funny position. It was gone in a week. FWIW.

I saw a dust web over a door frame, didn't want to bother with getting anything to help (broom, chair), jumped up to get it, and landed back down with a jolt. Took about 10 days to feel better. Not that long ago, too.

It got marginally better, but it's been two weeks and at the end of the day, standing up from sitting for hours at my clerking machine, I have to stoop to walk again, because it hurts so much. I took some mild muscle relaxers, but those just make me depressed, and don't do much for the pain.

It's almost gone today, and it's almost three weeks. I'm under 65, but not far under 65.

I have old man mystery sprains all the time. They seem to go away in a couple of days. This was not a mystery. I yanked myself from falling down a steep incline and something had to give, because I am olde. You know what a steep incline is because you live around me here in the hills of NC.

Sounds about right.
I used to be decent baseball player. Could throw it like a rocket, way off target usually.
I was in the backyard throwing a toy back and forth for the dogs to chase.
Now I throw with that girl-dorky throwing motion, and my arm hurts.
I am officially an old man. I guess it had to come to this one day.

I feel for you man.
This back pain makes me a very unhappy camper.
