Knock on wood but inflation just hasn’t been a factor for us. We live in a
paid off house and drive electric cars so we don’t buy gas or worry about
housing costs. I guess food and eating out have got more expensive but not
to the point of being noticeable.

Plus I’m a capitalist. If a good being more expense means it stays
available that’s how it’s supposed to work. Look at lumber, it was famously
expensive in the spring so a bunch of mills came online and bingo, now it’s
cheaper than it’s been all year. Capitalism works.

nor should you....the fact that your wife managed to slot into a cushy job at
a dept in the federal govt that is the definition of government waste, bloat, paper pushing,etc
doesn't make her a bad person. Hell if i weren't a psychiatrist and would have snagged a cushy GS job
right out of college with the potential to be a GS13+ you are damn right I would have gotten on(and still be
on) that train because from an employment standpoint there is nothing better than being in a GS13+ position
with fed govt.

It's not good for our country for two main reasons-
1) it alters the employment market, especially for white collar types without any 'hard' skills
2) its expensive to support all that govt employment

But a lot of the people themselves aren't bad. They're just playing the game well.

Here is a good question that one can ask themselves to see if they are overpaid or have a fortunate/great set up now: if
you were to leave your position tommorrow, how hard would it be to get another job doing a similar thing? And what would the total compensation likely be like in that new position?

In my case I would have a job immediately, here or elsewhere. At somewhat less money but I could work
my way back into my current setup pretty easily. I suspect you and most of your colleagues could find work
after a short while, maybe even instantaneous. But all these GS-13-14's without any firm skills who work for the fed govt and make 110-135k or whatever? In many cases that is the only game for them......

but hey it worked out so congrats to them I guess.

You are right about a lot of them. Heck my wife sees and has to work around
the bloat and deadwood every day. She would agree that three people could
do the job of her six person team…and hey guess what, in reality three
people do and she’s one of them. But her colleagues with similar expertise
and work ethic as her have done very well in the private sector after
leaving their govt positions.

I’m not saying she’s making any big sacrifice… she’s doing fine and there
are other reasons besides the salary that she chose the civil service after
a little over 10 successful years in the private sector. Salary isn’t
everything to everyone, I know you might find that hard to believe.

huh I've always been one to advocate non-salary advantages of taking a federal govt position(although salary in certain fields like social work and many generic administrative positions without
firm skills/certifications
is certainly better in fed govt) so I'm not sure where this comes from. Like my sister is a federal govt employee and makes probably 35-40% what I do(maybe a little more than that after adjusting for her retirement and benefit packages), but when you look at what's expected of her and her security and the ease of the job and all that in comparison to mine, she has the 'better' job.

Thats not a great comparison because even though she is a federal employee physicians(and some dentists I believe) are not in the GS system. But it is a good example in that it shows the advantages her position
has relative to mine in the private sector. Although another difference is she could easily get a different job if she wanted to(hell we'd hire her) whereas a lot of fed govt
employees, especially those with vague and soft skills and lawyers and paper pushers and whatnot, would probably face an uphill battle.
