Looks like Google is ending Usenet support effect Feb 15th, 2024.

I'll have to see what alternatives exist out there for Usenet posting.

I guess they've been having a lot of problem with spammers injecting
stuff into Usenet through Google Groups. I've seen complaints about
that in other newsgroups.

One possibility for you could be eternal-september.org. I've been using
that for a couple of years, and have been pleased with that. You do
have to set up a user ID there, but otherwise access is free. At that
point, you'll have to figure out what newsreader you want, although I
will note that Mozilla Firefox is generally adequate.

And if you're reading Usenet content, e-s is pretty good on spam
filtering. Although I've seen complaints about spam (especially
Google-originated), I'm assuming that that's coming from users of other
providers. I see very little spam in the groups that I follow through e-s.

I use the free SeaMonkey software [https://www.seamonkey-project.org/]
(a split-off from Firefox) for my newsreader, and I use
https://news.individual.net/ (10 euros a year) for my Usenet access.
It's easy.

There are free public news servers, like Eternal September, which I have
used in the past, but in my experience they're not quite as reliable.
This one costs next to nothing and is solid.

Yes, they do require a sign-up. It's free, but I think it's enough to
deter spambots submitting through them.

Also, I have the impression that they're pretty good on spam filtering.
I've seen discussion in some newsgroups that complain about the volume
of spam that comes from Google, but since the time I moved to e-s, I've
seen very little spam.

The only hitch I've experienced with e-s is that occasionally they go
down for... like... a few hours, never more than a day (possibly for
maintenance), and I can't post when I'm online. I used to use Google
Groups when that happened. Now I may have to just wait a day.
