I listen to 90% Irish music, so I'm certainly no expert on
American music. But I'm always willing to learn. So, every
time someone posts a link to “the greatest song ever”, I always
click the link and listen. But Jesus Wept! It usually turns out to
be mediocre at best and often it’s total crap!

So, way back on April 13, 2009, I posted a list of my 10 favorite
American songs. Now I freely admit my musical taste is certainly
eclectic and probably eccentric. I also just noticed that my
“Favorite 10” list hasn’t changed since 2009! So, it’s safe to say
I’ve probably missed a few good American songs in the past
13 years! LOL!

Now we all know that when some people post a list of their
“personal favorite songs” they really post what they think will
make them look smart, hip or trendy. Well, this is my real list.
This is the American music I listen to when I'm alone in the car
with the windows rolled up. Eight songs are vocals and two are instrumentals. If you have a couple of great American songs
you’d like to share, please do.

American Vocals:

“Darlington County” - Bruce Springsteen
“Heaven Only Knows” - Emmylou Harris
“Hold On Tight” - Gregory Isaacs
“Blue Moon Nights” - John Fogerty
“Boardwalk Angel” - Billy Joe Royal
“Bad Moon Rising” - John Fogerty
“I'm Looking for Someone to Love” - Buddy Holly
“That'll Be the Day” - Linda Ronstadt.

American Instrumentals:

“Last Date” - Floyd Cramer.
“Ashokan Farewell” - Scythian.

Oh hell, I'll give it a shot. Limiting myself to one song per artist:

"God is a Bullet" - Concrete Blonde
"Welcome to the Occupation" - REM
"If I Can't Change Your Mind" - Sugar
"Rock Lobster" - The B-52s
"American Jesus" - Bad Religion
"Cannonball" - The Breeders
"Bye bye Love" - The Cars
"Whip It" - Devo
"Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" - The Ramones
"Runnin' Down a Dream" - Tom Petty

10 favorite American songs? Not sure, but 10 American songs that are among my favorites.

“That Girl Could Sing” -Jackson Browne

“Peaceful Easy Feeling” -Eagles

“Deacon Blues” -Steely Dan

“Boys of Summer” -Don Henley

“Poor, Poor Pitiful Me” -Linda Rondstat

“Cracklin Rosie” -Neil Diamond

I might have been a hipster in college, but I don't think a single song on my list came out after my sophomore year of college.

Actually my taste has evolved significantly, none of those songs would have
made my list in college. I just haven’t evolved eras. Instead I’ve evolved
from favoring 1980s college student music to favoring 1980s old man music.

I'd start with Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, 1933 (Kern and Harbach), although some of those Stephen Foster tunes are pretty dang good.

Long Tall Sally, Little Richard
any number of Buddy Holly tunes (Maybe Baby?), or Chuck Berry..yes, gotta have Johnny B. Goode.
I Get Around, the Beach Boys

ok, I'm tired now...will come up with 5 more later
