If the NFL game is on something as widespread as NBC, or even ESPN? No.

If it's on a $10/month channel (going up to about $12/month in January; $15/month if you only want it during football season - and on top of that, you also need either a SmartTV or something like a Roku box to watch it on a large screen) like Amazon Prime? I would think about it - especially for some non-Power-whatever-the-number-is-this-week conferences. Is it worth it to get the channel for just one game a week?

Then again, maybe I should hold off on comments like this until I see what the ratings are for the first game.

At this point the nfl could put jags-texans on at 3am on channel 983 and it would still get a huge number.

Against Amazon streaming? Yes. Besides, ESPN has to put something on. Looks like they opted for WNBA.

more than were watching espn.

Illinois and UT Chattanooga play next week.

Perhaps it was a first-game honeymoon written into the contract. The NFL
does some weird scheduling stuff like that.

Early ratings are in: 5.9 million, if you include the people watching on a broadcast channel in the two teams' cities. That's actually slightly better than NFL Network games.
How many people have Amazon Prime, anyway? Quick check of the Internet...150 million (according to Statista)?

Yep, on Big Ten Network. ESPN is showing West Virginia / Virginia Tech and ESPNU is showing Coastal Carolina / Georgia State. Steelers / Browns will be on Amazon.
