With Cal ahead by 10, about 20 seconds to go, and no time outs, Stanford's QB threw a completion to the Cal 37, where the receiver fell to the ground....so Stanford could set up for a 61-yard field goal as the final play (which (a) was good, and (b) is the longest successful field goal in the 125-year Cal-Stanford series).

Trying to set some sort of record - that's the usual reason for something like this. It could also be good for the kicker's NFL prospects - at least, if the game was on TV on something besides the Pac-12 Network...
