With the host nation out I wonder how full the Olembe will be for Sunday’s final? I expect both Egypt and Senegal will be reasonably well supported but if the locals don’t show an interest there could be a lot of empty seats.

My worry is a half empty stadium will reflect badly on Cameroon’s 2030 World Cup bid. On the other hand, filling the stadium even when the host nation aren’t playing would give Cameroon’s bid more credibility.

Quite a one sided game for the most part with Burkina Faso going 3-0 up but Cameroon sprang into life late on and found three goals in the last 20 minutes to take the match to penalties (no extra time) and win third place on spot kicks.

Interesting VAR situation for BF's second goal. Player takes the ball to the line and crosses, Cameroon keeper Onana deflects the ball into his own net. Given as a goal kick in real time for the ball crossing the line before the cross, but VAR spotted that it was the player's foot and not the ball which was over the line - goal given. Don't recall seeing that particular combination of events for a VAR goal before.

Nothing against BF, who have contributed to the tournament but I'm pleased Cameroon at least secured third after going to the trouble of hosting the thing.

Senegal won the final against Egypt on penalties.

Egypt gave away a penalty very early on after a clumsy tackle but Gabaski saved Mane's spot kick. But Mane redeemed himself by scoring the winning penalty, so I'm sure nobody much minds. Both sides had their chances in the 90 minutes.

The stadium looked very empty before kickoff but when watching the match seemed more full? I'm not sure if it gradually got busier or if the camera being concentrated on the fans in the lower bowl made it seem more busy than it was but certainly the attendance didn't look too bad on the broadcast.

So the tournament that brought us running tracks, sunshine in January and even a match finishing five minutes ahead of time is over. All good things must come to an end but I'll quite miss switching on the tv in the afternoon to see matches from largely empty stadiums jazzed up with a soundtrack of vuvuzelas and trumpets.
