I wish mine was down to 5.4. It's hovering between 5.7 and 6.0.

Maybe if I gave up on my weekly slice or two of pizza (that's not happening) my weekly mac & cheese side (that's not happening, although I do leave the bread off of my meatball sub - yes, that does make it a lot harder to hold in my hands, thank you very much) my every other week or so chili cheese fries (you got it - also in the "not happening" column) my every couple of months or so lasagna (and by that, I mean, I go through an entire 9 x 13 baking dish in less than a week - and anything less than once a month is already cutting back)...

Is this a normal test done on a CMP or CBC? I don't find that test
anywhere, just a blood glucose. I have another hemoglobin test that
has a range from 13-17.

It's what my doctor told me. Mine (and most, I think) are mg/dL for
daily readings, while A1C is a 3-month average. Here's a chart about
each.

Standard (no diabetes): Less than 5.7%
Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.5%
Diabetes: 6.5% or higher

Before meals (fasting) After meals (post-prandial) Other
Adults with type 1 diabetes (see guidance) 80–130 mg/dL < 180 mg/dL (1
or 2 hours after)
Adults with type 2 diabetes (see guidance) 80–130mg/dL < 180 mg/dL and
(1 or 2 hours after)
Children with type 1 diabetes (see guidance) 90-130 mg/dL 90–150 mg/dL
at bedtime/overnight
Pregnant people (T1D, gestational diabetes) (see guidance) < 95 mg/dL
140 mg/dL (1 hour after) 120 mg/dL (2 hours after)
65 or older (see guidance) 80–180 mg/dL 80–200 mg/dL for those in
poorer health, assisted living, end of life
Without diabetes 99 mg/dL or below 140 mg/dL or below

I guess they don't order A1C unless you are at least pre-diabetic. I've never
heard any rumblings about it for me.

Mine got up to 6.3, but after the better part of a year on the What's That diet, I got it down to 5.7 (not to mention losing about 60 pounds).

What's the "What's That" diet? Simple -
Bread, including things like hamburger buns;
Pizza;
Pasta;
Rice;
Beans;
Most fruit;
Pretty much all desserts -
What's That?
(Seriously, it's pretty much a low total carb - that's total, and not net - diet)

by diet (watching carbs and sugars), exercise, and weight loss. Any
other issues that require active intervention?

My mom has Type 2, and her insulin was inexplicably spiking super high during the night, and she had to get a pump.
