Do you remember Jerry at the press conference saying he would hold it
against players who chose to opt out? I thought that was idiotic.
Good for Dallas he didn't mean it.

Actually, he said that missing out on their
Senior year, a year in which a player has
700 plays, and their performance, per Jerry
& coach McCarthy, improves (most of the
time, as sometimes it declines), that was
a disadvantage for those players.

In the following pre-draft press conference
video, at the 49:00 minute mark:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv84pLVne_U&t=3078s

Questioner: "Jerry, going back to Michael
was talking about medical, how do you view
players who did not play last year, oh really
for all three, how do you grade them?"

Jerry: "They're compromised. I'd much rather
have seen the reps and the plays that they
got. Coach, tell me here, how many plays
in a normal situation would let's say a defen-
sive tackle, by playing last year as opposed
to not playing last year, if he would've played
all of his college games."

Coach McCarthy: "I mean 71 plays a game,
10 games."

Jerry: "700 plays. And plus usually those
players, if they're the type player you want,
are better from their Junior to their Senior
year. Fair to say?"

Coach McCarthy: "Oh absolutely."

Jerry: "That's what you look for. So the point
is you don't have as much information when
they didn't play last year."

The following is a writer's interpretation of
that portion of the pre-draft press conference:
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2021/4/27/22405825/dallas-cowboys-pre-draft-press-conference-sean-lee-future-jerry-jones-dont-be-stupid-in-your-needs

"Players who opted-out

Jerry Jones was blunt in saying opt-out players
are compromised, they are missing somewhere
like 700 plays last year of tape. He noted many
players get better in their senior year, but now
you don’t have that information."

~~~
Of course that works both ways, one *should*
get better but one runs the risk of injury and
of having one's performance decline.
Micah Parsons had the advantage of having
a great year in 2019. Kelvin Joseph, he may
have been a 1st round draft pick (Mel Kiper
ranked him 25th best player overall back in
February) but after having missed 2019 and
opting out in just the last 2 games of 2020, ...
.... having only 9 games to be judged on, one
can only guess if playing in those last 2 games
would've led to him being drafted any higher (I
doubt it, but I suppose it's possible but most
of Kelvin's situation reflects NCAA rules that
prohibited him from playing in 2019).
It was not so much what Jerry said but how he said it, except he used
the loaded term "compromised". McVay made the same points about reps on
tape, but he was clear he would not hold opting out against anyone.
It came across entirely differently. Just my impression, obviously.
In any case, this year I will be rooting extra for any player I remember
opting out, with Duvernay-Tardif at the top of the list.
