Despite JL getting recent support from Captain Tim, those good ol' SCG
members Malcolm Conn & Daniel Brettig continue to smear their sourceless
shit over the coach.

"Patient knocks: Mutiny was two years in making

An emergency meeting between Cricket Australia and team leaders came two
years after concerns about Justin Langer’s approach were first raised,
write Malcolm Conn and Daniel Brettig.

Afull-scale mutiny of players and support staff was needed for Cricket
Australia to notice a fundamental problem with Justin Langer’s intense and
abrasive coaching style.

Despite spending $100,000 on two reviews, it took an emergency meeting with
team leaders last week for CA chairman Earl Eddings and recently appointed
chief executive Nick Hockley to find out an implosion was taking place
heading into an Ashes summer.

During this hook-up, Test captain Tim Paine, white-ball skipper Aaron Finch
and vice-captain Pat Cummins repeated what players and support staff had
been saying for more than two years: Langer was wearing everyone out. This
has been compounded by players and support staff feeling his management
offsiders Ben Oliver and Gavin Dovey are too close to Langer to objectively
challenge him.

In 2018, CA hired leadership consultant Tim Ford to help the reintegration
of Steve Smith and David Warner into the team following their year-long
suspension over Sandpapergate.

This process was devised to lead to a ‘‘clear the air’’ meeting between all
parties in the UAE before a limited-overs series against Pakistan.
According to multiple sources, it evolved into an avenue to raise concerns
about the coach. Held in Dubai as Smith and Warner were heading to their
IPL franchises and the Australian oneday team was returning from a tour of
India, one player said it became a ‘‘hey Tim, while you’re here, can we
talk about the coach?’’ session.

This followed scenes in the Amazon documentary The Test that depicted Tim
Paine, Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb all conveying feedback to Langer
at the end of the Boxing Day Test defeat to India in December 2018. Nathan
Lyon was also shown commenting, light-heartedly, on the fact it had been
unusual to see the head coach with a ‘‘smile on his face’’ during the final
Test of the home summer against Sri Lanka in Canberra. Langer took on the
feedback and on The Test says: ‘‘This is my year of letting go.’’

But he struggled to put those words into action on the 2019 World Cup and
Ashes tour, when players complained regularly about the coach’s demeanour.
In mitigation, Langer spent much of the trip struggling with inner-ear
problems, to the point he was unable to front the players to tell them
which ones had made the cut for the Ashes tour following an internal trial
match.

At this point, overall accountability for the performance of the Australian
men’s side passed from the interim boss Belinda Clark, who had replaced Pat
Howard in late 2018, to new ‘‘head of national teams’’ Oliver, chosen after
years of working alongside Langer in Western Australia.

Meanwhile, Langer’s close friend and team manager Dovey was promoted from a
logistical role to high-performance management on the road.

The 2019 tour was celebrated for Australia retaining the Ashes in England
for the first time since 2001, but it was a wasted opportunity. The series
was drawn 2-2 but, as clearly the better side, Australia should have won
it.

Multiple sources confirmed that informal discussion of the team environment
went on after the Ashes and before the home summer, when Pakistan and New
Zealand were soundly beaten.

Just who received the original Ford review remains a mystery because
nothing changed, so when CA brought him back for a ‘‘values’’ review after
the Test series loss to India early this year, the players and support
staff insisted it go straight to the CA board.

They wanted the men and women who run Australian cricket to be in no doubt
that an old-style footy coach was not the way forward in the age of
claustrophobic cricket.

Players and support staff spoken to by the Herald made it clear they took
the opportunity to be frank about how they felt the coach was wearing
people down.

The upshot was the hiring of two more senior assistant coaches, Michael Di
Venuto and Jeff Vaughan, to create further room between the coach and the
players.

Langer also received what Finch described at a press conference as
‘‘confronting’’ feedback during a pre-season gathering on the Gold Coast
two months ago.

Langer’s take on that feedback was it had come as a total surprise. This
was completely at odds with what players and support staff had been saying
for more than two years. Just last week, Eddings and Hockley needed an
emergency meeting to be told all this again.

Even then, Hockley put out a statement hours before the meeting, praising
Langer.

This further angered players and support staff spoken to by the Herald, who
felt CA was being dismissive of their team leaders by pre-empting an
emergency meeting seen as a last resort to address the squad’s greatest
issue.

They have no faith in how Cricket Australia will heal what has become a
weeping sore."

Jernalism at its finest.

Given that the only senior Test players (aside from Paine) are all NSW
players you don't need to be Holmes, S to deduce where the anti-Langer
smears are coming from.

Sydney, the only thing it's good for is exporting Covid delta. Bah!

The Guardian carried a piece the other day from a Melbourne-based
writer saying much the same things.

You can either hire a new coach or replace the current players with
ones who will get on with Langer.

Langer's sole qualification to coach the Test team is that he played
100 Tests. His previous attempts at coaching teams have been
disastrous, with players who have options (as with English county
players who can find another county) making beelines for the exit as
soon as they can find another home and those who can't find another
gig spend their time complaining as the results go down the toilet.

Whatever his other qualities, he's a fucking awful coach. Why you're
so desperate to defend this hopeless bozo is quite beyond me.

Cheers,

Mike

Perhaps you could tell me exactly which players are the ones who don't "get
on" with Langer?

Aside from his successful stints as WA Shield & Perth Scorchers, that 100
Tests as a player was more than the only coach Oz has ever had who *wasn't*
subject to 'our' biased & rotten press. RB Simpson. Born and bred in, guess
where!
[Ironically some of the *alleged* characteristics that have been used to
beat JL with were also present in Simpson. Characteristics he was lauded
for bringing to the national team].

Really? In two of his three season as WA coach he took them to the Shield
final, including their first in 15 seasons. And in his tenure as Scorchers
coach they absolutely dominated the BBL.

These are facts Micheal and not the baseless assertion technique you are
sharing here with the likes of Conn and crew.

Easy. Blatant double standards, gutter journalism and imo, that the leaks
coming from inside the team are coming convicted ball-tamperers, serial
chokers, mouth-breathers and prima donnas. aka, the NSW contingent.

Re-reading the article, I'm reminded of the Peter Moores saga. He was
appointed England coach on the strength of having coached a number of
young players into being the sort of player who deserved a go to see
how he got on as an international.

He then proved that his methods were also successful at coaching very
good Test players into being the sort of player who deserved a go to
see how they got on.

Fortunately for all concerned, the ECB saddled Moores with KP as
captain, with results so dire that they could sack both of them at the
same time.

Cheers,

Mike

It's true that he was a disaster as England coach. But he seems to have
done a really good job at Nottinghamshire in helping Hameed to rebuild
his game, for which all England supporters should be grateful. It might
be that he's a much better coach now than he was six years ago.

No. He was a brilliant county-level coach before he was appointed to
the England job. What he's brilliant at is taking raw material and
moulding it so that it's ready to play international cricket.

International players should not need technical coaching. They got
selected because they already have the technical skills which someone
like Moores is superb at developing. International-level coaches watch
them play and diagnose the problems they are having and then have a
chat which helps the player himself work out what solution will best
work for him without screwing up the rest of his game.

Cheers,

Mike

Ahh. That'd be the Sam Perry who was born and raised in Sinney, played
Grade in Sinney, graduated from Sinney Uni, has written for the SMH &
Foxtel and is mates with the aforesneered Daniel Bretting.

I can see why his bio reads "Melb based".

MALCOLM CONN

Veteran batsman Usman Khawaja could have an awkward return to the
Australian dressing room after suggesting players were stabbing besieged
coach Justin Langer in the back.

Some players spoken to by the Herald are unhappy with the reference Khawaja
made during a video posted on his YouTube channel this week, in which he
discussed his relationship with the coach.

In the video, Khawaja said: ‘‘How do you think JL feels? He probably feels
like the guys in the team are stabbing him in the back. And that’s what it
looks like.’’

However, Khawaja explained yesterday that he was simply putting himself in
the coach’s shoes, not making accusations.

‘‘I was wondering how he was feeling,’’ Khawaja told the Herald. ‘‘I was
simply trying to be respectful, and I felt bad for JL. He comes from a good
place. I encourage everyone to watch the video, so they can get the full
context of what I’m saying.’’

The stylish left-hander is among the favourites to fill one of the holes in
Australia’s batting line-up this Ashes summer if he starts the Sheffield
Shield season well. He averaged 59 as Queensland captain last summer.

With Langer’s intensive and abrasive coaching raising heightened concerns
among players and support staff, and Khawaja seen as an example because of
his confrontation with the coach in The Test documentary, Khawaja decided
to post the video.

It came days after increasing disenchantment about Langer’s coaching style
came to a head at an emergency meeting of Cricket Australia bosses and
leaders of the national teams.

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings and chief executive Nick Hockley
hooked up with Test captain Tim Paine, white ball captain Aaron Finch and
vice-captain Pat Cummins.

Strangely, Hockley put out a statement before the meeting saying Langer
would see out his contract, which ends in the middle of next year,
following the Twenty20 World Cup and the Ashes. An uneasy truce ensued,
with Paine saying on his Hobart SEN radio show that the players and coach
would be going forward together during the next six months. Neither Hockley
nor Paine made any reference to Langer’s future beyond his current
contract.

Khawaja said that in spite of his confrontation with Langer early in his
coaching tenure, their relationship was ‘‘really good’’.

‘‘I still talk to him, I still text him here and there,’’ Khawaja said on
the YouTube video. ‘‘That’s because we have a lot of respect for each
other.’’

Khawaja also added perspective to his dropping midway through the 2019
Ashes series.

‘‘People think I got dropped because I spoke up to him, stood up to him and
all these other things,’’ Khawaja said. ‘‘It’s actually quite the opposite.
I feel like I became closer with him. I feel like he gained my respect and
I gained his respect because we had some really open and honest
conversations together.

‘‘So let’s just stop it right there. There were two people who dropped me
for the Ashes, [then chairman of selectors] Trevor Hohn and JL, so it
wasn’t just JL.’’

Khawaja is considered a strong chance to regain his place in the Test side,
either as David Warner’s opening partner or at No.5 in place of Matthew
Wade.

It is telling the selectors named just three specialist Test batsmen in the
contract list this year

– Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith – after a disappointing series
loss to India.

Khawaja averages 41 in 44 Tests with eight hundreds. He hit six of those in
Australia, where he averages almost 53. But his overseas record is
disappointing, averaging under 29 from 20 Tests."

What a little bitch Conn is.

if they do ditch Langer, do they have a candidate lined up to replace him?

Gillespie was very successful at Yorkshire and many thought he turned down
the england job so he would be available for the oz coach, but seems he
got the vibes wrong and ended up at PNG. But hes at Adelaide now, although
SA didnt do that well last season in the SS. Like they didnt win a match I think.

If it was up to Alvey anyone from Queensland, maybe Annastacia
Palaszczuk who will keep any Victorians or NSWelshmen out. Excellent job
at the moment

Phil Jaques Trivia:

After coaching Qld to 4th and 5th respectively in his two years here as
coach, Qld won the Shield the season immediately after his unscheduled, and
much celebrated, scuttling back to Sinney. His first appearance in a Shield
final really inspired the players. Unfortunately for Phil it was the Qld
players he inspired to their thrashing of his current side featuring their
"world class" bowling.

Journalists will hope he doesn't get the job. It's not a name they'll
want to have to spell too often. :) (Or should that be "she"?
Annastacia looks like a female name.)

SHE is the Premier of Q'land responsible for the border closures keeping
