Well, I suppose every off-season I get incredibly
bored this time of year what with nothing going
on of interest, so heck, I'm going to peruse the
news to link to and post excerpts about each of
the Cowboys 2021 draft picks.

Keep in mind, last season I was overly optimistic
regarding the Cowboys draft, so keep in mind the
following is highly presumptive with no way of know-
ing how the rookies will actually fare in the upcom-
ing preseason / season:

https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/mick-shots-some-capping-off-the-offseason

.... Cowboys first-round draft choice Micah Parsons
signed the standard four-year deal, with the club
option for a fifth back on June 9. Not bad for the
12th pick in the draft, four years, $17.079 million
fully guaranteed that comes with a $9.781 million
signing bonus.

But remember, with these rookie deals under the
CBA, those guys don't break the team's salary
cap, Parsons counting $3.1 million this year. If
these off-season workouts are any indication of
things to come, that will be a steal. ...

.... In the second round of this year’s draft, the Cow-
boys selected another defender. With the 44th over-
all pick, they drafted cornerback Kelvin Joseph from
the University of Kentucky. Standing at 6’1” and 192
pounds, Joseph can add a lot of speed and ball skills
to the Cowboys’ secondary, and he has the frame ...

.... to play well in Quinn’s cover-3 scheme. However,
his off-the-field issues raised a flag for NFL scouts
and analysts. ...

.... With the 75th overall pick, the Dallas Cowboys sel-
ected defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from UCLA in
the third round. Standing at 6’1” and 282 pounds, he
is an explosive, disruptive tackle who recorded 27.5
tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in 43 games with the
Bruins.

Odighizuwa plays with a lot of intensity off the snap
and is always looking to make plays in every area of
the field. ...

Hawkeye defensive end Chauncey Golston was sel-
ected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 84th overall
pick. ... Golston’s four-year rookie contract is pro-
jected to be worth about $4.9 million, according to

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 269 pounds,
Golston was a mainstay on Iowa’s defensive line for
the last three seasons, competing in all of the Hawk-

ston is projected to be the Cowboys’ backup right de-

far, and expectations for him are high when training

.... Film room: Why Dallas Cowboys LB Jabril Cox will
become a starter by 2023 - John Owning, Dallas Morn-
ing News

Perhaps the Cowboys’ most universally praised draft
pick this year was LSU linebacker Jabril Cox, whose
value as a fourth-round pick was hailed by almost ev-
eryone. But in a crowded linebacker room, Cox may
be waiting a few years to become a starter.

Look around the NFL and you will see that the pre-
vailing body type for linebackers has changed. The
6-foot-4, 250-pound downhill thumpers have given
way to the 6-foot-2, 230-pound athletes who can
make plays sideline-to-sideline and, most import-
antly, thrive in coverage.

That last point is why Cox will become a starter in
the future, as the 6-foot-3 and 232-pound linebacker
excels in coverage.

As offenses have zeroed in on creating mismatches
and taking advantage of the defense’s second-level
defenders, players like Cox have become extremely
valuable on Sundays in an effort to defend opposing
offense’s aerial attacks.

In college, Cox’s film in pass coverage is some of the
best I’ve seen at the linebacker in recent memory,
as he even outperformed most safeties in the class
against the pass.

Cox is excellent in zone coverage, as he does well
relating to receivers entering his area while maintain-
ing the proper spacing and reading the quarterback’s
intentions. ...

/> .> Round 4, Pick 138 – Josh Ball, OT, Marshall
https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/mailbag-guessing-at-the-dt-rotation

.... I hear all about our defensive rookies, but what about
Josh Ball? We picked him in the fourth round, how did
he look during OTAs?

David: From our vantage point, Ball looked to me like a
guy who was trying to acclimate to the speed of the NFL
game. It's a big jump from college, and I'd guess he's
going to have his hands full with experienced NFL pass
rushers like DeMarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory and
Tarell Basham.

That's to be expected, though. I'm not going to be sur-
prised if he looks a lot more comfortable in September,
after a month of training camp practices, than he looked
during OTAs.

Rob: I agree with Dave about Ball adjusting to the speed
on the edge. There were a couple snaps this spring where
pass rushers got past him, including Micah Parsons dur-
ing rookie camp.

But it's really hard to evaluate offensive and defensive
linemen without pads, so I read next to nothing into that.
The real test will be training camp and preseason, and
Ball will get a ton of opportunities, possibly at both tackle
spots. ...

https://thelandryhat.com/2021/06/15/dallas-cowboys-3-hidden-gems-offense-2021/

.... Simi Fehoko – WR, the Cowboys spent their 179th pick
in the 2021 NFL Draft on a big-bodied wide receiver from
Stanford, Simi Fehoko. This may appear a curious contri-
butor on the surface, but there is more than meets the eye.
Fehoko is bringing multiple aspects to the Cowboys that
they do not currently have.

The top three receivers, Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup,
and CeeDee Lamb, should combine for roughly 3,000
yards. They won’t be dethroned. What Fehoko can do
is take off some pressure in the red zone.

Coming in at 6-foot-4 and nearly 225 pounds, the former
Stanford Cardinal is a big-bodied presence with the ability
to make acrobatic catches. Fehoko can go up and get a
fade route or out-muscle a smaller defensive back in a
mismatch.

My gut tells me the Cowboys didn’t spend a pick here only
to have him miss the active roster. Noah Brown has shown
us what he is made of and his seat might just be getting a
little hot with Fehoko being younger and providing special
teams ability.

I don’t think Fehoko explodes onto the scene by any means
in an already crowded WR room, but this is one area that
some hidden output could steal a game or two if he can
reel in a touchdown in an unlikely moment. ...

/> .> Round 6, Pick 192 – Quinton Bohanna – IDL, Kentucky
https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/mailbag-guessing-at-the-dt-rotation

.... How did Quinton Bohanna look this spring? Does he
really have a chance to outperform Trysten Hill, or he
will be a situational player along with Neville Gallimore?

David: If you made me guess at the starting defensive
tackles here in June, I think Neville Gallimore is going
to be one of them – so I don't view him as a situational
guy.

Bohanna is interesting, because he's one of just a cou-
ple defensive tackles who has the body type to fill space
in the middle. I think it's more likely he'll be competing
with the likes of Brent Urban and Carlos Watkins for
playing time, whereas I view Hill as more of a pass
rusher.

Rob: Again, very tough to evaluate linemen in these types
of practices, but just based on movement, Bohanna has
more quickness off the snap than maybe I expected from
the 330-pound nose tackle.

If I had to project the tackles who get the most snaps this
season, right now I'd probably say Neville Gallimore and
Brent Urban, with Bohanna competing for rotational work. ...

https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2021/6/21/22544100/israel-mukuamu-has-the-potential-to-be-a-solid-safety-option-for-the-dallas-cowboys

Israel Mukuamu has the potential to be a solid safety
option for the Dallas Cowboys. In the initial moments
after the Cowboys drafted South Carolina’s Israel Muku-
amu it became obvious that they were getting someone
with insane athleticism. Mukuamu is about 6’4” and
weighs 205 lbs. which means he is pretty long and ...

.... muscular. ... it's unlikely that Mukuamu will have a
legitimate opportunity to contribute in 2021, but his
physical gifts separate him from most and are some-
thing that the organization clearly like. Ultimately he
may be a sort of slow burn, but patience is a virtue
and all that jazz. ...

.... Dallas really likes to have a player that is more than
just a backup center occupying a roster spot. Joe Loo-
ney was the exemplar for them, able to play all three
interior line positions at a high level.

That is one reason to see if Matt Farniok gets a lot of
work with the second team, and if they are using him
at multiple spots. It is always a long shot for any sev-
enth-rounder, but his history of having started at all
five offensive line positions could be very seductive
for the staff.
