The faster-moving Mercury is presently passing between the slower-moving Earth and our parent star at the centre of all planetary motions.

Aside from all the other features explained previously like luminosity and size differences as the planet runs back and forth around the Sun, another one is the speed at which the planet passes from left to right (retrograde motion) compared to right to left (direct motion) as seen from the C3 camera free from daily rotational influences.

When I look out my window and watch a car move from left to right across the frame of the window, it moves rapidly from one side to the other. This would represent a planet in retrograde motion as an analogy.

A car in the distance travelling in the opposite direction away in the distance crosses the frame of the window much slower as the distance across the window frame is much larger for that further distance. This represents Venus and Mercury in direct motion, again, as an analogy.

This is for those with integrity who have a love of their solar system neighbourhood and can easily interpret what is in front of them with all the technological advances that 21st-century imaging allows.

There is always a temptation to throw good information after bad, in this case, the less than productive RA/Dec framework with its traits derived from the rotational characteristics of the Earth within the calendar system unsuitable for discerning the motions of Venus and Mercury as they run smaller and faster circuits than the Earth.

The big news of the 1919 eclipse is in contrast to this era where permanent eclipse conditions are facilitated by a satellite free from rotational influences on observations so that anyone with an interest in solar system structure and planetary motions can visit that website for creative and productive endeavours-

https://sol24.net/data/html/SOHO/C3/96H/VIDEO/

The permanent eclipse conditions allow observers to appreciate that everything to the left of the Sun represents an evening appearance close to the Sun and everything to the right as a dawn appearance. Jupiter has transitioned to a dawn appearance while Mercury is in the process even though both planets are presently travelling in opposite directions relative to the Sun.
