Just a reminder that the possession or use of fireworks in the state of
Massachusetts is illegal without an appropriate license:

Fun.

About an hour ago my office was shook by a long series of explosions,
rockets launched from about 1/4 mile away in San Francisco. I went on
the roof and it was wild. Rockets went straight up maybe 300 feet and
exploded big-time. This went on for about 1/2 hour. Dozens of car
alarms went off from the shock.

Like everything else, you seen the prices lately? In the Northeast just
a few shoebox fulls probably costs $3-500. They sound like dedicated
celebrators

But the MA law definitely tends to fall under "Can't Enforce" territory
as there are dozens of shops just across the state line into NH "Live
Free Or Die"* *some restrictions may apply, consult the fine print

But MA laws on other stuff (like marijuana) are much more relaxed, so
going across the border northbound there are signs for ye olde gun and
firework shoppes, and southbound they say something like "Have you tried
cannabis today?"

There are a variety of state and local regulations regarding fireworks,
here.

E.g., I can buy them in the city -- but not USE them, here! Anything
that "leaves the ground" is banned in the state. Of course, that
doesn't actually prevent their use!

One of the country clubs nearby has "traditional" (ground and aerial)
firework displays *every* saturday night. We just pull the curtains
back on the living room window and watch from the comfort of the
air-conditioned interior. So, there's not much "special" about
them.

By contrast, the lakefront in Chicago had a great off-shore display
accompanied by a well-attended concert, in the park. Similar
to the Pops at the Hatch shell.

Sadly, presentations that last too long find the skies full of too much
smoke to mar the latter displays.

Yeah ... it's much easier to get gun license and shoot it. Not the
same, but better than sparklers!

Here amateur fireworks are banned in the city but are legal in the
county. The city/county line is quite irregular due to patchwork
annexations but this time of year you can always tell where the line is
-- the firework stands set up on the county side.

We're very relaxed about firearms, fireworks, marijuana and so forth.

NYS had rather strict laws against fireworks. I managed to get arrested
in my hometown, a village of about 2000, by a cop with whom I went to
grade school. My brother-in-law, a silver tongued legend in his own
mind, facilitated the matter. Jimmy, the cop, as he cuffed my to another
friend, said 'I hate to do this but if we arrest that asshole we have to
arrest all of you.'

I actually did have an explosives permit to purchase black powder but it
didn't cover fireworks.

I left NYS in '71 and the way it's going I sure as hell am never going
back.

The best display I've ever seen was in Boston. Handel's 'Music for the
Royal Fireworks' and 'Water Music' were simulcast on one of the FM
stations. That's a hard act to follow.

I also went to Boston's First Night in the early '80s. The version here
ain't quite the same either.

Yep, the state line fireworks stores bilk 'em good, too, the prices are
nuts now:

<https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/hillsborough-county/fireworks-harder-find-more-expensive-nh-still-illegal-ma/ESPIU4LYFNGNNPYFZGEP2EXKGQ/>

The punishment for possession in MA is pretty mild though, like a $100
flat fine & seizure of items per offense (note: all flat-fine
punishment statues mean it's meant to apply to the poor only, God bless
America, land of the free*) *Freedom may entail extra charges, check
your local listings for details

IDK if it's the same now but in Maryland I believe it was, there was a
$200 fine for transporting cigarettes in from Virginia without paying MD
taxes on it.

$200..per carton! Sucked for my friend's father who one day somehow got
nabbed carrying 40 cartons. That's how you know the state is really
ripshit at you for "stealing" from them.

Boston takes First Night celebrations very seriously, though usually the
times I've been it's been cryogenically cold even for Boston in late
December.

Some say this improves the experience

The crowd is a big part of the experience. The park is a sizeable piece of
real estate -- imagine the Commons stripped of trees and flattened. Then,
enlarged by a factor of 5 or 6.

Place the Hatch shell there. With an unobstructed view of the lake -- just
a large, empty BLACK space over which the fireworks are displayed.

Instead of being seated at the *real* Hatch shell and looking across the
Charles at the institute on the far (close!) shore, you see nothing save
the barges from which the fireworks are launched.

And, the fact that they are a few "sound seconds" away makes the large flashes
all the more exciting -- the flash tells you to brace for the delayed sound.
"Oh, this is gonna be a BIG one!"

Ever since leaving the east coast, New Year's has been a large disappointment.
Time Square is the defining timestamp. Seeing the ball (apple, whatever) drop
at 10PM just doesn't work, psychologically.

The ice sculptures don't melt... One freaky First Night in Missoula it
was in the '40s and raining. That sucked even more than the one with a
minor blizzard going on.

I'd thought about going the the one in Phoenix but the security sounded
like a real PITA. This was the year of 9/11; maybe it's toned down now.

I haven't made it to 12 PM at the local operation for a long time. The
last one I can really remember was in 1999. A few people were in the
office and I was on call but when the band played Auld Lang Syne and the
lights didn't go out I concluded I could go home and go to bed.

I suppose it's time for the fireworks to commence. A few years ago some
amateur chemist upstaged the 4th on the 2nd of July. Rumor had it he was
attempting to make hash oil or some other derivative that required
butane as a solvent. When I heard the explosion I knew it wasn't an M-80.

How stupid is Troll Doe?

Troll Doe posting one of its vacuous insults at 05:39:20 UTC on 20 Mar
2022 with a grammatical error:

http://al.howardknight.net/?ID=164790428800

Then, at 05:55:56 UTC, 16 minutes and 36 seconds later, Troll Doe
responds to its own post with a correction, but stupidly forgets that it
sets a Followup-To: header to the "alt.test.group", resulting in its
correction article posting only to "alt.test.group":

http://al.howardknight.net/?ID=164790440700

Troll Doe, mister "always.look@message.header", is so stupid it does not
even remember it sets a Followup-To: header in its own vacuous insults.

Special thanks to corvid <bl@ckb.ird> for pointing out the stupidity of
Troll Doe:

http://al.howardknight.net/?ID=165594737000

The Troll Doe stated the following in message-id
<sdhn7c$pkp$4@dont-email.me>:

> The troll doesn't even know how to format a USENET post...

And yet, the clueless Troll Doe has continued to post incorrectly
formatted USENET articles that are devoid of content (latest example on
Tue, 05 Jul 2022 03:52:52 GMT in message-id
<oAOwK.270218$Aqw9.265146@usenetxs.com>).

NOBODY likes the John Doe troll's contentless spam.

This posting is a public service announcement for any google groups
readers who happen by to point out that John Dope does not even follow
the rules it uses to troll other posters.

This is a strange firework, I thought it was a signal flare at first but
flares don't usually burst AFAIK. Looks like it's designed to look like
some kind of two-stage missile:

Cincinnati Toyota Pepsi sponsored on ten barges out in the Ohio
River, all triggered to music perfectly and it was a dual display
five barges each had identical displays separated by nearly half a
mile of river front and over 250 people lining the river banks on
both sides.

That was twenty years ago. I don't know if they still do it or who
does it or sponsors it. It is a labor day thing.

I saw the Statue of Liberty Refurb unveiling fireworks display from
the Hudson River shoreline way back when... July 4 1986.

I was working in Infra-Red thermometry at the time. Long before
imaging devices were commonplace. Ours had a liquid nitrgen bath to
even work and was a mere 4 frames per second on a 640 x 480 screen.
1986.

<sg3kr7$qt5$1@dont-email.me>:

> The reason Bozo cannot figure out how to get Google to keep from
> breaking its lines in inappropriate places is because Bozo is
> CLUELESS...

And yet, the clueless Troll Doe has continued to post incorrectly
formatted USENET articles that are devoid of content (latest example on
Tue, 5 Jul 2022 22:49:41 -0000 (UTC) in message-id
<ta2f65$3qkgi$4@dont-email.me>).

NOBODY likes the John Doe troll's contentless spam.

This posting is a public service announcement for any google groups
readers who happen by to point out that John Dope does not even follow
the rules it uses to troll other posters.
