For an engineer or a physicist the value 3.1 has many unknown digits to the right. If I set a DC power supply to 3.1 Volts it could be at 3.14 or it could be at 3.08 Volts, and so forth. It could vary a bit too.

The fact that the mathematician and the engineer are dealing with the decimal value differently is problematic.

Lately I've been arguing on the infinite form here, and it is workable in some cases, but ultimately I reject this notion of infinite precision. What the mathematician means by 3.1 to the engineer is 3.1000... and the impossibility of achieving this value on the physical continuum is well understood.. To what degree is the continuum gray? This actually suits epsilon/delta theory. This gray theory has physical correspondence. Beyond this the rational value theory is easily challenged. As the mathematician claims to have achieved a theory of continuum I find it is not so secure other than by those practicing what is preached, and that is not a mathematical mindset.
