you clearly don't do serious photo editing and never have.

the gimp might be ok for casual use, such as tweaking colour balance or
cropping, but even that, it's less than ideal.

those who actually do serious photo editing, use far more capable apps
than the gimp can ever hope to be, based on the gimp's own road map,
including photoshop, lightroom, pixelmator, and many others.

the gimp is comparable to where photoshop was 10+ years ago and still
lacks features photoshop had 20+ years ago.

the gimp is *much* slower than photoshop on the exact same hardware.

raw processing in the gimp is nowhere near as good as what's available
with other apps.

as i said, the gimp is not even worth free. it's that bad.

get a tablet, or run android apps on windows.

if you're actually serious about photo editing, either dual-boot into
windows or a virtual machine and use the apps that actual pros use.

I don't think you even know what "photo editing" means. Let alone
"serious editing".

As to the Gimp books, they're all useless because they are by
definition confined by what Gimp is capable of doing. Which is "not
much" when compared to other, superior, products for other platforms.
Learn to use the man pages.

If you really are serious, research which tool to use before even
looking at operating systems. Then use whatever platform that tool
requires.

The point is to use whatever tool is need to get the job done, and not
to restrict the job to what the tool you have happens to be capable
of.

Sorry I can't help you with this, but if you want a gimp mask, well just make sure if fits
and you don't have any alergies to the materail used and they don't provide much covid protection,
but if wearing one out and about most people will aviod coming near you, they'll certainly stay at
least 2 metres from you on public transport.

I've hardly ever found any "How To" book for any computer application
much good. I have personally about two dozen books on programming
languages, MS office software, databases, etc. One huge irritation is
when they direct you down menu options until you reach one that does not
exist in your version.

IMHO the way to learn is to get stuck in and try it, and when you get
stuck go searching on the net. You will still find leads that go
nowhere, but you will occasionally find real gems.

Quite a lot of the better "freeware" has a decent online manual, often
downloadable.

I do have a Gimp book somewhere, but I have not used it for years. I
find Picasa does most of the basic stuff that I need, I only rarely
venture into RAW.

Darktable is free and available for Linux.

Gimp is more of an image editor than a photo editor.

And for the record, I do know professional photographers that use Linux
and will not touch Windows, in order to keep their job safe and secure.
So, ignore all those fan boys :-)

I would suggest you ask instead on Linux groups, they will be more
friendly and tolerant about you asking about photography instead, LOL.
