India sets sights on a moon base by 2047
News
By Andrew Jones published 1 day ago
The head of the nation's space agency recently laid out a provisional
roadmap for lunar exploration.

India is setting long-term goals that could see the country establish
its own moon base before 2050.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman S. Somanath set out a
provisional, integrated roadmap for exploring the moon in a Nov. 28 talk
at a symposium organized by the Indian Society of Geomatics and the
Indian Society of Remote Sensing. The plan would build on India's recent
lunar achievements and progress in human spaceflight ambitions.

India became the fifth country to make a successful robotic moon landing
this year with its Chandrayaan-3 mission. Following this, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi said in October that India should aim for "new and
ambitious goals," including putting astronauts on the moon by 2040.

S. Somanath’s roadmap builds around this new goal and sets out a
near-term phase of technology buildup, focusing on the Gaganyaan human
spaceflight plan, developing new launch vehicles and increasing robotic
landing capabilities.

Outlined missions include the joint Indian-Japanese LUPEX rover and the
Chandrayaan-4 lunar sample-return effort. Such work is envisioned to
build up to a crewed docking with the NASA-led Gateway space station in
lunar orbit, a crewed lunar landing, and, ultimately, a lunar base and a
sustainable moon economy, based on minerals and tourism. A Next
Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV) would be developed to facilitate some
of these missions. That new rocket will be partially reusable.

The plans are tentative but reveal the thinking of ISRO and are
indicative of its long-term ambitions. More concretely, the agency is
currently preparing test missions as a step to a crewed orbital mission
with its Gaganyaan spacecraft.

The artificial problems they faced raised the point that they had supplies,
simulated communications and life support equipment to move without
mechanical assistance, so the physical strength and endurance of large male
athletes mattered. Ronda Rousey was the only strong female, of the others
Tinashe contributed leadership and technical ability (and sanity) but the
physical tasks overwhelmed her. Their imitation space suits reportedly
weighed 60 pounds. Shatner was spared the need for one on the excuse that
he'd been in space so long he had acclimated to it.

The military deals with similar situations with trucks and plenty of fit
young men, farmers with a tractor with bucket loader, both likely to be too
large and heavy to transport. The ISS has the Canadarm.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadarm

I use Army field rigging techniques to move logs weighing a ton or more onto
my sawmill with equipment I can carry. A block and tackle on an aluminum
pole tripod can lift a lot but not move it sideways very far, that takes a
wheeled vehicle. Logs of course can be rolled.

I modified a "platform stacker" similar to this with off-road wheels to lift
and move loads around the yard.
https://www.vestil.com/product.php?FID=258
There is another version with larger rear wheels that doubles as a
two-wheeled hand truck, to climb stairs.

It handles home yard and garden lifting tasks including pulling engines
pretty well and was meant to substitute for a forklift in light industry.
Whether something like it would be enough to assemble and maintain a
habitation is an open question, perhaps worth exploring. I know mine could
use outriggers to safely lift beams to roof height. If I didn't have an
engine hoist (converted to an off-road trailer) I'd add a jib crane at the
top because the larger wheels hinder sliding heavy things onto the platform.
Wheeled equipment like snowblowers with clearance underneath aren't a
problem.

A lightweight vertical hoist would permit for example assembling a geodesic
dome by working on the ground at the bottom edge. A vertical hoist for beams
and columns and this 22.5 Lb ladder are all I need to build and maintain
flat roofed woodsheds that withstand a heavy winter snow load.

I mention this for civilian discussion. The pros don't need my help, I
learned from them.

I thought I might like that show,
sorry,,,,, no.
Within about 1/2 hour I was out of there.

I am reminded of the first sequel to
Arthur C. Clark's "Rendezvous with Rama"
-- now Clark always has professionals doing their best,

that sequel was obviously was not at all written by him.
Just total amatures trying to be selfish....

Agreed, the rest of Rama wasn't up to his usual standard. I'm not tempted to
pick pretty flowers.

You didn't miss anything on Stars. The first few mission problems were
somewhat reasonable then it went downhill. To reboot an infected computer
Armstrong had to pedal 20 miles and Tinashe (a recording engineer) had to
decipher a Simon-like music sequence puzzle.
